Julia Roberts Hints at '90s Role Return – Fans Pray for a Comeback

A Possible Sequel to My Best Friend's Wedding?
Julia Roberts has built a legendary career in Hollywood, with iconic roles that have left a lasting impact on audiences. From her portrayal of the charming Shelby in Steel Magnolias to her Oscar-winning performance as Erin Brokovich, she has consistently delivered unforgettable performances. However, one film that continues to resonate with fans is My Best Friend's Wedding, released in 1997. In this romantic comedy, Roberts played Julianne Potter, a food critic who discovers her feelings for her best friend’s fiancé just days before his wedding. The film also featured Dermot Mulroney as Michael, the charming love interest, and Cameron Diaz as Kimberly, the innocent bride-to-be.
Now, there's a possibility that this beloved film could be getting a sequel. In a recent cover story for Variety, ahead of her new movie After the Hunt, Roberts revealed that she has been approached about revisiting her role as Julianne. "No, they're talking to me," she said, sparking excitement among fans. The news has led to an outpouring of support from viewers, with many expressing their enthusiasm for the idea of seeing Roberts, Mulroney, and Diaz reunite on screen.
One fan wrote, "This sequel might heal a generation's unresolved feelings," while another suggested, "MY BEST FRIEND'S DIVORCE would be such a good title and movie and could be fun!" Although not everyone is eager for a sequel, some fans believe that the original ending was perfect and that not everything needs a follow-up. One account commented, "Noooo, the way it turned out is fine, not everything needs a sequel."
The idea of a sequel gained momentum when Mulroney, during a promotional appearance for Netflix's The Hunting Wives in July, mentioned that "there is talk of a sequel." However, he admitted that he knew "nothing about it" and added, "Last I heard, quote, lawyers were talking, unquote." This statement has raised hopes that the project might move forward, even if it's still in the early stages.
Mulroney is open to the idea, especially since he cherishes his experience working with the cast. "Oh my gosh, the whole thing was a dream," he recalled. He remembered how he felt when he landed the role, saying, "I knew even when I got the audition for it with Julia, like waiting in line with a whole bunch of other guys, and I got the role. I knew – and all of Hollywood knew – it was going to be an exceptional movie."
In 2019, the cast reunited for a photoshoot with Entertainment Weekly, where Roberts shared her memories of the film. She praised the humor and physical comedy that made the movie so special. "I just thought it was really clever and just funny. All the physical comedy I loved. Lots of falling down and falling through things, falling all over myself, falling over Dermot," she said. She highlighted a particular scene that stood out to her: "The scene, for me, that made it feel so authentic and earnest is when I finally tell Dermot's character, ‘Pick me. Let me make you happy.’ Just that line: That's just so succinct and sweet and meaningful."
If a sequel does come to fruition, it could be a nostalgic treat for fans who have cherished the original film for decades. While the future of the project remains uncertain, the excitement surrounding it shows that My Best Friend's Wedding still holds a special place in the hearts of many.
