Honoring Robert Redford: His Environmental Impact and Bay Area Roots

A Legacy of Art, Activism, and Environmental Stewardship

Robert Redford, a legendary figure in Hollywood and a passionate environmentalist, has passed away at the age of 89. His representatives shared that he died at his home in the mountains of Utah, a place he cherished deeply and where he was surrounded by loved ones.

Born in Southern California, Redford maintained strong ties to the Bay Area throughout his life. Over a career spanning more than six decades, he proved to be much more than just a heartthrob for young girls. He became an Academy Award-winning filmmaker and a dedicated advocate for various causes, including indigenous culture and civil rights.

Heidi Kühn, a Marin County native and founder of the nonprofit Roots of Peace, reflected on how Redford inspired many during their youth. “For most young girls, our teenage heartthrob was Robert Redford, in their lockers,” she said with a smile. Through her work in replacing landmines and restoring farmland, Kühn has had multiple interactions with Redford over the past two decades.

“He used that fame for a higher purpose, and that is the legacy that I most admire about Robert Redford,” Kühn added. Her admiration for him extended beyond his film roles, such as “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” or “The Sting.” Instead, it was his commitment to using his platform for meaningful change that left a lasting impression.

For 50 years, Redford served as a board trustee for the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), a leading U.S.-based environmental advocacy group. Daniel Hinerfeld, director of Rewrite the Future at NRDC, spoke about Redford’s deep involvement in key campaigns. “He was dedicated to protecting the American West, not only its wilderness and wildlife but also ranchers, farmers, and indigenous people and cultures,” Hinerfeld explained.

Hinerfeld, who works on initiatives to help Hollywood tell climate-related stories, described Redford as a long-time mentor. “He mentored us as media makers and filmmakers, and he marshaled resources for us to tell our stories,” Hinerfeld said. Redford’s influence extended beyond his own passions—filmmaking and environmental protection—to supporting others in their pursuits.

One of Redford’s most significant contributions was founding the Sundance Institute, which is now known worldwide as the Sundance Film Festival. In 2005, he co-founded the Redford Center in San Francisco with his son, James. James passed away in 2020 after battling cancer. Hinerfeld highlighted how the center represents the culmination of Redford’s passion for both filmmaking and the environment. “It uplifts diverse storytellers and helps them tell positive, inspiring stories about the environment,” Hinerfeld said.

For Kühn, Redford’s legacy feels especially relevant today. “During these turbulent times, it integrates music, art, culture, and beautiful shots of the earth, reminding us to be stewards of the one earth we’ve been given,” she said. “That is the legacy of Robert Redford.”

Redford had a home in Tiburon until the end of last year and was inducted into the California Hall of Fame in 2022. California Governor Gavin Newsom released a statement in response to his passing: “Robert was one of the foremost actors of his generation, a champion of modern cinema and independent film, and a deeply good man. He understood the complexities of life and found beauty in the small details. His care for the world we live in was reflected in his actions through his environmental work and the Sundance Institute, where he nurtured new talent and fresh voices in the film industry. A child of California, Robert was a man of boundless creativity and great empathy. He will be sorely missed, but his legacy will live on through all those that he touched and the millions more he inspired.”

Redford’s impact on the world will continue to be felt through the countless lives he touched and the movements he helped shape. His work as a filmmaker, environmentalist, and advocate leaves behind a powerful and enduring legacy.
