An Irish woman, Maureen Slough, 58, from Cavan, made a decision that shocked her family when she chose to end her life in Switzerland through assisted suicide. What initially seemed like a vacation turned into a painful reality for her loved ones, who were left reeling after discovering the truth.

Megan Royal, one of Slough’s daughters, shared how her mother had told the family she was going on a trip to Lithuania. However, this was just a cover for what was actually happening. It was a close friend of Slough who broke the news to Royal late one night. The message came at a time when Royal was with her baby, making the revelation even more devastating.

“Your mom’s in Switzerland,” the friend said. “She’s there and she wants assisted suicide.” The shock of the message left Royal in disbelief. She tried reaching out to her father, who then contacted Slough. Although Slough claimed she would return home, the next day, Royal learned that her mother had passed away.

The emotional impact of the news was overwhelming. Royal described the moment she received the text as a complete breakdown. She was alone with her child, and the realization that her mother was gone felt like the end of her world.

Pegasos, an assisted dying nonprofit based in Liestal, Switzerland, facilitated Slough’s death. According to reports, the clinic was paid approximately £15,000 for its services. However, the financial details have sparked controversy, especially regarding the procedures followed by the organization.

Slough’s brother, Philip, expressed concerns about the clinic’s process. He claimed that while Pegasos stated his sister went through an extensive screening, the family was not properly informed according to the guidelines. He has requested an investigation into the matter.

Philip suggested that his sister may have found a way around the system by creating a fake paper trail of required approvals. He believes that the documents provided to Pegasos were fabricated, including letters of complaint to medical authorities in Ireland regarding supposed medical conditions.

Pegasos, however, claims that the files show Royal supported her mother’s decision. But Royal denies this, stating that she was not aware of her mother’s intentions.

“I am working on the assumption that my sister created this email and the clinic’s procedures were woefully inadequate in verification,” he wrote to officials. He also mentioned that the circumstances surrounding his sister’s death are highly questionable.

Mick Lynch, Slough’s partner, shared his last conversation with her. He recalled that she was upbeat and full of life, talking about having breakfast and planning to sit in the sun. He believed she was heading somewhere but thought she would return home.

Royal revealed that her mother had a history of mental illness, including a past suicide attempt triggered by the deaths of her two younger sisters. While acknowledging that her mother was in pain, Royal emphasized that she did not believe it was enough to justify ending her life.

“She had a lot more life to live and give,” Royal said. “She was just in a dark time. She wasn’t terminally ill or, in my opinion, ill enough to go and do this and leave our family behind like that.”

Despite the tragedy, Royal is taking steps to honor her mother’s memory. She has made arrangements for her mother’s funeral and plans to bury her alongside her two sisters.
