Guardians 7, Tigers 5: Ten-Inning Collapse

Detroit Tigers Fall in Dramatic Fashion to Cleveland Guardians
The first game of a midweek three-game series at home against the Cleveland Guardians was a rollercoaster of emotions for the Detroit Tigers. The team managed to tie the game with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, only to collapse spectacularly in the tenth inning, resulting in a 7-5 loss. This game highlighted both the resilience and the struggles of the Tigers as they try to find their footing during a crucial stretch of the season.
Casey Mize, who has had a strong run in his last two starts, has been a key player for the Tigers. In his previous outings, he allowed just one run in five innings and two runs in six innings, without issuing any walks. This performance comes after a rough patch in August, and it’s clear that Mize is positioning himself as a strong candidate for the number-two starter in the rotation, which is no small feat considering the talent in the Tigers’ pitching staff.
On the other side, the Guardians relied on Joey Cantillo, a left-handed pitcher from Hawaii making his eleventh start of the season. Known for his array of curveballs and changeups, Cantillo brought a different kind of challenge to the Tigers' offense. His ability to mix pitches effectively helped keep the Tigers off balance throughout the game.
Cleveland took an early lead in the second inning when Nolan Jones hit a double to right field, followed by CJ Kayfus singling to score Jones. The Tigers responded in the bottom of the same inning, but their attempt to tie the game fell short when Andy Ibáñez was thrown out trying to score from first. Dillon Dingler’s double to left was a good effort, but the relay from Steven Kwan and Gabriel Arias was too quick to allow Ibáñez to reach home.
The Tigers evened the score in the third inning with a solo home run by Gleyber Torres, who hit the ball on a 3-0 count. However, the Guardians quickly regained the lead in the fourth inning when Gabriel Arias hit a solo home run. They extended their advantage in the sixth inning with a combination of hits and errors, including a stolen base by José RamÃrez and a double by Bo Naylor that scored RamÃrez.
Mize was pulled from the game after the sixth inning due to a high pitch count, and Holton came in to relieve him. Holton was able to shut down the threat, striking out Kayfus to end the inning. His performance showed promise, and if he can continue to be reliable, it would be a big boost for the Tigers’ bullpen.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Tigers managed to get runners on the corners with one out, thanks to a hit-by-pitch and a single. However, they were unable to capitalize on the opportunity, and the inning ended with a lineout by Meadows.
Bailey Horn replaced Holton in the eighth inning, and he gave up a single but struck out Naylor. Rafael Montero then entered the game and struck out Arias to close out the frame. Torkelson led off the eighth with a sharp hit to left field, but Kwan made a great play to limit the damage.
Montero pitched a perfect ninth inning, but the Tigers needed a dramatic comeback in the bottom of the ninth. They faced Cade Smith, a tough pitcher, and managed to tie the game with a home run by Kerry Carpenter. The excitement was short-lived, however, as the Guardians quickly took control in the tenth inning.
Will Vest was brought in for the tenth, and the Guardians capitalized on the momentum. Brayan Rocchio started on second, and Kwan hit a double to take the lead. Angel MartÃnez followed with a triple, and RamÃrez added another double to extend the lead. Manzardo and Arias continued the scoring, making it 7-3. The Tigers tried to fight back, but Torkelson’s home run in the bottom of the tenth was not enough to change the outcome.
Final score: Guardians 7, Tigers 5
