Gordon's Mashed Potato Meltdown in 'Train to Table' Challenge

The Top 8 Duos Take on a New Challenge
Tonight on MasterChef, the Top 8 duos are faced with an intense team challenge that takes them outside of the familiar kitchen environment. This time, they must prepare a VIP dining experience aboard a moving steam train. It’s a test of teamwork, precision, and quick thinking as the teams race against the clock to deliver a fine-dining experience for 60 VIP passengers. The team with the fewest votes will face elimination in the dreaded Pressure Test.
The challenge is divided into two teams, each with their own set of responsibilities. The Red Team, led by Zach & Michelle, includes Rachel & Julio, Timothy & Athena, and Tonna & Cait. The Blue Team, led by Jessica & Jesse, consists of Adam & Joel, Azu & Javier, and Tina & Aivan. Each team is assigned specific dishes to prepare, requiring them to work cohesively without any creative input on the menu itself.
The Menus
For the Red Team, the amuse-bouche is a Crab Vol Au Vent with Crème Fraîche, Dill, and Salmon Roe Caviar, followed by a Filet Mignon with Sautéed Mushrooms, Mashed Potatoes, Wilted Greens, and Peppercorn Sauce. The Blue Team's amuse-bouche features a Sesame-Crusted Ahi Tuna Crisp with Avocado Purée and Pickled Onions, while their main course is a Pan-Seared Duck Breast with Butternut Squash Purée, Roasted Carrots, and Port Wine Sauce.
The Challenge Begins
One duo from each team is responsible for cooking and serving the amuse-bouche on the moving train, which presents its own set of challenges. The cramped space and the presence of judges Joe Bastianich and Tiffany Derry make it even more intense. Meanwhile, the remaining team members focus on preparing the main course, which must be ready when the train returns.
For the Blue Team, Adam & Joel are tasked with the amuse-bouche, while Rachel & Julio handle the same for the Red Team. During the initial stages, some issues arise. Tina struggles with seasoning her tuna, prompting Jesse to step in and assist. Gordon Ramsay also warns Zach & Michelle about their teammates, Tonna & Cait, who lack the skills to properly sear steak.
The Taste Test
During the taste test, Joe points out that the Blue Team’s tuna is overcooked and the sesame seeds are not toasted. He also notes that the duck is beautiful but the carrots are undercooked and under-seasoned. On the Red Team’s side, Joe comments that both courses look technically sound but sloppy. Gordon adds that the crab is under-seasoned and the steak is undercooked, expressing his lack of confidence in Tonna & Cait’s ability to cook the filets.
After making adjustments, the train departs, and the competition officially begins. Service onboard goes smoothly, with the Blue Team’s tuna being a standout. Once the passengers return to their seats, both teams scramble to get the main courses ready. However, Gordon becomes increasingly frustrated with the Red Team, particularly with their mashed potatoes, which he describes as “watery, lumpy, and bland.” He calls the situation a “frickin’ train wreck.”
The Results
Despite the harsh critiques, the Blue Team wins the majority of the votes for their “style and finesse,” securing their place in the Top 7. The Red Team’s duos—Zach & Michelle, Rachel & Julio, Timothy & Athena, and Tonna & Cait—will now face off in a high-stakes Pressure Test, where at least one pair will be sent home.
As the competition continues, the pressure mounts for the remaining contestants, setting the stage for another intense episode of MasterChef: Dynamic Duos.
