Tom Phillips, a New Zealand father who had been on the run with his three children for nearly four years, met a tragic end following a fatal shootout with law enforcement. The incident occurred on September 8, when police were called to a suspected burglary in Poipoi, a small town in the Waikato region of New Zealand’s North Island. During the confrontation, Tom was killed, and one of his children was taken into custody, while the other two remain missing.

The story of Tom Phillips began in 2021, when he disappeared with his children—Jayda, Maverick, and Ember, who are now believed to be 9, 10, and 12 years old—after an alleged dispute with their mother. For almost four years, the family remained hidden in the wilderness, evading authorities despite extensive searches and a $80,000 reward for information about their whereabouts.

According to reports, Tom and his children had been living off the grid, relying on his survival skills to provide for them. However, his actions led to multiple criminal charges, including aggravated robbery, aggravated wounding, and unlawful possession of a firearm. In October 2024, Tom was spotted by pig hunters in a remote area of the North Island, and two weeks prior to the fatal encounter, police released CCTV footage suggesting he was involved in a break-in in Piopio.

On the day of the incident, police received a tip about two individuals riding a four-wheeled bike near the scene of the burglary. Based on previous intelligence linking Tom to the area, officers set up spikes on a nearby road. When the bike ran over the spikes, it came to a stop, and the police arrived at the scene. A confrontation quickly escalated into gunfire, resulting in an officer being injured and airlifted to a hospital. The child involved in the incident was unharmed.

Acting Deputy Commissioner Jill Rogers stated that police were making urgent efforts to locate the remaining two children, expressing serious concerns for their safety. “We are actively seeking them as we speak,” she said. Detective Senior Sergeant Andy Saunders added that while the outcome was not what they hoped for, the priority now is to find the other children and ensure their safe return.

Tom’s sister, Rozzi Phillips, confirmed his death to local media, although formal identification has not yet been completed. The mother of the children, Cat, expressed relief that the ordeal had ended but also sadness over how events unfolded. She emphasized her hope for the safe return of all three children and extended gratitude to the community and those who supported them during the past four years.

Cat also shared her desire for the other two children to be found and returned home safely, while asking for privacy as the family works to help them reintegrate into a stable and loving environment.
