Tony Alberti, a software developer at Sandia National Laboratories, emphasized how XR is changing the way professionals are trained. “We take a 3D model of something, put it into virtual reality, and have somebody go through a process of assembly and disassembly of it. So, if there is something in the field that’s either very expensive or very dangerous by the time people encounter that in the field, they will have gone through that training in VR several times over.”

Enhancing Public Safety Through XR

One of the companies leading the charge in using XR for public safety is Scivista, based in Santa Fe. The company is developing tools that could significantly improve wildfire management by enhancing the precision of prescribed burns. Mike Langon, CEO of Scivista, explained how VR can be used to train personnel. “So you can teach the people about a prescribed burn in the virtual world, and they can make all the mistakes they want to make— and nobody gets hurt. Take them out in the real world and they have one chance at it.”

This application of XR technology not only improves safety but also ensures that those involved in critical operations are well-prepared for real-world scenarios. By allowing individuals to practice in a controlled environment, the risk of errors during actual operations is minimized.

While current XR headsets may still be bulky, the future looks promising. Gallegos noted that these devices are expected to become sleeker and more user-friendly, resembling everyday glasses. “Getting this unique set of folks together for this conference is instrumental in moving this forward,” he said, highlighting the importance of collaboration in advancing XR technology.
