Doug Matthews Honored as 2025 Brewer Trophy Winner

Honoring a Legacy in Aerospace Education

The National Aeronautic Association (NAA) has recognized Doug Matthews as the 2025 recipient of the Frank G. Brewer Trophy, one of the most esteemed awards in the field of aerospace education. This honor celebrates individuals who have made significant and lasting contributions to the advancement of aviation and space learning in the United States. The trophy is permanently displayed at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., symbolizing the enduring impact of those who have shaped the industry.

Past recipients of the award include notable figures such as Edward Stimpson, Peggy Chabrian, the NASA Spacelink Team, Barrington Irving, and Glendon Fraser, who was honored in 2024. Each year, the selection committee identifies someone whose work has profoundly influenced the field and inspired future generations.

A Lifetime of Dedication to Aviation Education

Doug Matthews has spent over six decades advancing aviation education across the globe. His innovative teaching methods have not only set new standards for training but have also inspired the development of new industries and expanded educational opportunities for students. As a leading expert in vintage aircraft instruction, Matthews has flown and taught in a wide array of historic planes, including the Douglas SBD Dauntless, North American P-51 Mustang, T-6 Texan, F-86 Sabre, Lockheed T-33, Grumman F6F Hellcat, F8F Bearcat, Marchetti S-211, and Aero L-39.

Beyond his technical expertise, Matthews has been deeply committed to supporting future leaders in aviation through philanthropy. In 1984, he established the Matthews Scholarship at Emory University's Goizueta Business School. He continues to fund the Matthews Aviation Scholarship, which assists young pilots in obtaining their FAA Commercial, Instrument, and Multi-Engine ratings.

"His innovative training methods, comprehensive manuals, and rigorous classes have prepared thousands of pilots to excel with professionalism and safety. His legacy will continue to shape aviation for years to come."

The Selection Committee and Future Celebrations

The 2025 Brewer Trophy Selection Committee included a diverse group of aviation professionals and leaders. Members included Jennie Balzer from Republic Airways, Jeanie Engle from NASA (ret.), Stephanie Griffith from the Aero Club of Washington, Jim Remar from The Cosmosphere, Shannon Wiedekamp from Equus Flight Academy, Kara White from Hemlock Films, and Theresa Daly from Bombardier.

The formal presentation of the 2025 Brewer Trophy will take place at the NAA Fall Awards on November 6, 2025, in Washington, D.C.
