Dale Jr. Speaks Out on Bubba Wallace's Mental Health Struggle

Bubba Wallace's Journey Through Mental Health and Racing Success
Bubba Wallace, the driver for 23XI Racing, has always been open about his struggles with mental health. In a conversation with Dale Earnhardt Jr. a few years ago, he shared, “I’ve never looked at it as a sign of weakness.” This candid admission marked a significant moment in his career, highlighting his willingness to address the challenges he faced both on and off the track.
Wallace, who hails from Alabama, has had a long journey in the world of stock car racing. Starting with Bandolero and Legends car series, he eventually moved up to Late Models and then into NASCAR. His path hasn’t been without obstacles, including incidents like the noose found in his stall at Talladega Superspeedway in 2020 and the constant backlash from fans on tracks and social media. Despite these challenges, Wallace has remained resilient, often using his platform to speak out about mental health issues.
Dale Earnhardt Jr., who has also faced numerous challenges throughout his career, could relate to Wallace’s experiences. On the Dale Jr. Download podcast, he reflected on how Wallace’s openness about his mental health struggles resonated with him. “I kind of really relate to that,” Earnhardt said, acknowledging the emotional toll that such experiences can take on a racer.
Earnhardt himself has dealt with significant physical and mental challenges over the years. He suffered from 20-25 concussions during his decades-long racing career, which ultimately led to his early retirement from NASCAR in 2017. The aftermath of these injuries took a toll on him mentally, especially during the later years of his career. Additionally, the pressure of being the son of the legendary Dale Earnhardt added another layer of difficulty to his journey.
For someone like Bubba Wallace, discussing mental health in a predominantly white sport was a bold move. However, he stood by his decision, stating, “It’s helped so many people. And I’m like, ‘Oh, I didn’t know it was such a big deal.’ I was just asked what was going on, and I told them because I’m an open book.”
Wallace has also spoken about the challenges he faced as a Black driver in NASCAR. For the last four or five years, he has felt the pressure to prove himself in the Cup Series. Despite the adversity, he has managed to push through, and his recent win at Indianapolis Motor Speedway came at a crucial time.
A Well-Deserved Victory and Words of Wisdom
The victory at Indianapolis Motor Speedway was a significant milestone for Bubba Wallace, as it ended his 100-race winless streak. The No. 23 Toyota driver led 30 laps, battled through a dangerous late caution, and kept Kyle Larson at bay in two overtime restarts to secure the win. This result was particularly meaningful for Wallace, as his team had recently lost their charters and were forced to compete in the open category.
After the race, Dale Earnhardt Jr. offered some words of wisdom to Wallace. “I want to give you a piece of advice, you don’t really need any, but, this is the best advice that I think I got in the moments like this. Enjoy every second of this. All the media you’re going to do after this, all the other moments you’re going to have. Whether it’s the party tonight…enjoy it. Soak it all in. You never do this again and also you’re locked into the playoffs, all that pressure rolls off your back, I know what that feels like. So just take it all in, enjoy it man.”
Wallace took this advice to heart, celebrating with friends and soaking in the moment. Earnhardt added, “You can prepare for the next one in a day or two. But give yourself about 24, 48 hours to have some fun.” With the momentum from this win, Wallace is now focused on Iowa Speedway, hoping to carry forward the success and secure back-to-back victories.
