Tragedy Strikes Uvalde as Congressional Staffer Dies in Fire

A tragic incident occurred in Uvalde, Texas, over the weekend when Regina Santos-Aviles, a congressional staffer for Rep. Tony Gonzales, died after she caught on fire. The 35-year-old left behind an 8-year-old son, and her family is now dealing with the heartbreaking loss.

According to local authorities, emergency services were called to a home in Uvalde on Saturday, September 13, shortly after 9:30 p.m. local time. The Uvalde Police Department confirmed the incident, and the San Antonio Express-News reported that Santos-Aviles was found on fire when first responders arrived.

Fire Chief Mario Range shared details of the situation, stating that the fire had already been extinguished using a fire extinguisher. EMS personnel were on the scene treating a woman who had suffered burns. She was transported by ambulance and later flown by helicopter to a hospital in San Antonio. Unfortunately, she was pronounced dead the following morning.

Despite the ongoing investigation, local officials have stated there is no indication of foul play. The Uvalde Police Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety's Rangers Division are working together to determine the cause of the incident. The local medical examiner’s office is also conducting its own investigation into the cause and manner of death.

Santos-Aviles’ mother, Nora Ann Gonzalez, told the San Antonio Express-News that she found her daughter outside their home. According to her, Santos-Aviles was still conscious when emergency services arrived. “The last thing she said is, ‘I don’t want to die,’ ” Gonzalez recalled. “And they told her, ‘We will do our best to make sure we get you taken care of.’”

Her death has left a deep impact on the community, especially on Rep. Tony Gonzales, for whom she worked. In a statement released by Texas Public Radio, Gonzales expressed his grief, saying, “Regina devoted her profession toward making a difference in her community. She will always be remembered for her passion towards Uvalde and helping the community become a better place.”

Santos-Aviles’ LinkedIn profile shows that she joined the U.S. House of Representatives as a regional director in November 2021. Her work focused on supporting the local community and advocating for the people of Uvalde.

Uvalde Police Chief Homer Delgado expressed his condolences to the family and friends of Santos-Aviles. In a statement, he said, “As your Chief of Police, my heart goes out to the family and friends who are grieving. In times of loss, our greatest duty is to stand together, support one another, and honor the memory of those we have lost.”

The police department also confirmed that they are working closely with the victim’s family, who are fully cooperating with investigators during this difficult time.
