Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez, a well-known footballer from Mexico, is currently facing significant criticism after making a series of controversial and sexist comments on his social media platforms. The former Manchester United star recently posted several videos and reels, mainly on Instagram, where he expressed his opinions on gender roles. In one of the posts, he stated, “Don’t be afraid to be women, to allow yourselves to be led by a man.” He also claimed, “Women, you are failing, you are eradicating masculinity, making society hypersensitive.” Such statements have been widely criticized as outdated and offensive.

Sheinbaum, the first female president in Mexico’s 200-year history, responded to these remarks at a news conference. She acknowledged Chicharito’s talent as a soccer player but emphasized that his views on women need significant improvement. “He still has a lot to learn,” she said, highlighting the importance of respecting women and promoting equality.

Chicharito, known for his role as the all-time leading scorer for the Mexican national team with 52 goals, returned to Mexico last year after playing for various clubs, including Real Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, West Ham, and Sevilla. However, his performance since returning has not met expectations, with only two goals scored in 25 matches during his first two tournaments back in the Mexican league.

The controversy surrounding Chicharito has led to disciplinary actions from both the Mexican Soccer Federation and his club, Chivas. The Gender and Diversity Commission of the Mexican Soccer Federation fined him for making statements that promote sexist stereotypes, which they consider a form of media violence against gender equality in sports. Although the exact amount of the fine was not disclosed, the federation warned that more severe penalties could follow if the behavior continues.

Chivas, while not naming Chicharito directly, issued a statement condemning any behavior that reinforces harmful stereotypes. The club emphasized its commitment to promoting freedom, respect, and full development for all individuals, both within and outside of sports.

This incident marks the first time the Mexican Soccer Federation has sanctioned a player for misogynistic comments. Earlier this year, businessman Ricardo Salinas Pliego, owner of the Mazatlán and Puebla clubs, made harsh remarks about female journalists but faced no consequences. This inconsistency in addressing such issues has raised concerns about the effectiveness of current policies.

Chicharito’s career has had its share of controversies. He was banned from the national team in 2019 after organizing an unauthorized party in New York following a game against the United States. His recent comments have further complicated his standing in the football community and beyond.
