A New Zealand Father's Deadly Escape with His 3 Children Ends in Police Shooting

A Man Evading Authorities for Four Years Killed in Shoot-Out
A man who evaded authorities with his three children in the remote New Zealand countryside for nearly four years was shot and killed by a police officer on Monday, according to law enforcement. The incident took place after the man robbed an agricultural supplies store early that morning. One of the children was with him during the confrontation, while the other two were found in the forest hours later.
The disappearance of Tom Phillips and his children, now approximately 9, 10, and 11 years old, in December 2021 puzzled investigators for years. They searched the densely forested area where they believed the family was hiding. Although Phillips and his children were thought to have remained near their rural home in Marokopa on the North Island, credible sightings of them were rare.
Phillips has not been officially identified, but authorities believe he was the man killed during the shoot-out. A police officer was critically injured during the confrontation, suffering multiple gunshot wounds from a high-powered rifle. The officer is undergoing surgery and is expected to survive, though further procedures are likely.
Children Found Hours After the Incident
After the shooting, the whereabouts of Phillips’ other two children were unknown, and authorities expressed serious concerns for their safety. However, about 13 hours later, it was reported that the children had been found unaccompanied at a remote campsite in rugged forest. The child taken into custody during the robbery cooperated with authorities, helping narrow the search area.
The farm supplies store targeted in the robbery was located in a small town within the same farming region of Waikato, south of Auckland, as the settlement where the family originally vanished. The case has captured the attention of many New Zealanders, and authorities frequently appealed for information without success.
Sightings of Phillips were limited to surveillance footage showing him allegedly committing crimes in the area. He was wanted for an armed bank robbery in May 2023, which he committed while accompanied by one of his children. During this incident, he reportedly shot at a member of the public.
Authorities Believe Phillips Had Help
Phillips did not have legal custody rights for his children, according to Detective Senior Sgt. Andrew Saunders. Authorities stated that the children had no access to formal education or health care since their disappearance. Law enforcement always suspected that Phillips had help concealing his family, and some residents of the isolated rural area expressed support for him.
A reward of 80,000 New Zealand dollars ($47,000) was offered for information about the family’s whereabouts last June, but it was never claimed.
Previous Disappearances
December 2021 was not the first time Phillips made national headlines after disappearing with his children. In September of the same year, the family went missing, prompting a three-week land and sea search after Phillips’ truck was found abandoned on a wild beach near his home. Authorities eventually ended the search, believing the family might have died, before Phillips and the children emerged from the dense forest, claiming they had been camping.
He was charged with wasting police resources and was due to appear in court in January 2022. However, weeks before the scheduled date, he and the children disappeared again. The police did not immediately launch a search because Phillips, who was experienced in the outdoors, had told family he was taking the children on another trip. He never returned.
The search intensified again in 2023 after several sightings of Phillips in the same region where he had vanished. He was last seen on surveillance video in August this year as he robbed a grocery store at night, accompanied by one of his children.
Mother Issues Statement
The children's mother issued a statement to Radio New Zealand on Monday, expressing deep relief that the “ordeal” for her children had ended. She said, “They have been dearly missed every day for nearly four years, and we are looking forward to welcoming them home with love and care.” The woman has only been identified by her first name, Cat, in New Zealand news outlets.
