A chaotic scene unfolded at Lake Worth High School on a Thursday afternoon when a reported fight escalated into a situation that required the use of pepper spray. The incident led to an extensive emergency response, with dozens of students and staff being taken to local hospitals for treatment.

Palm Beach County Fire Rescue (PBCFR) confirmed that approximately 20 to 30 individuals were treated and transported to surrounding hospitals. The event occurred near Lake Worth Road, close to the school, where multiple fire-rescue units remained on the scene for several hours. According to Tom Reyes, the Public Information Officer for PBCFR, a total of 32 students and faculty members were taken to four area hospitals. School resource officers were also dispatched to each facility.

Despite the severity of the incident, officials have not disclosed how many students were directly involved in the altercation or whether more than one fight took place. Additionally, no specific details about injuries have been released, though it has been confirmed that most of the affected individuals suffered minor injuries due to exposure to pepper spray.

The emergency response was swift and comprehensive, with multiple fire-rescue units and law enforcement agencies arriving on the scene within five minutes. Reyes highlighted the scale of the operation, stating that 18 rescues, six engines, three EMS captains, and three battalion chiefs were among the resources deployed. The goal was to treat and transport affected individuals as quickly as possible.

A school district spokesperson confirmed that a school police officer used pepper spray to break up a large fight around 12:30 p.m. Cell phone videos captured the chaos, showing students screaming and rushing out of the cafeteria as pepper spray filled the air. Some students covered their faces while others coughed and even threw up from the effects of the spray.

Gabe Sandoval, a junior at the school, described the experience. He said he and many others were exposed to the pepper spray. "We were outside, and we started seeing a bunch of people running outside the cafeteria and we were wondering what's going on," he recalled. "We heard over the walkie that there were a couple fights going on inside the lunchroom, so we tried going inside the lunchroom and they started pepper spraying the whole lunch."

Sandoval added that the situation quickly spiraled out of control, with more fighting occurring outside the cafeteria. Students were seen punching and throwing each other to the ground. He also mentioned that there had been other fights earlier that morning.

Parent Tony Grant shared his concern after his daughter was caught in the middle of the incident and exposed to pepper spray in her eyes. "I think that the pepper spray was overboard, totally overboard," he said. "Our kids cannot even enjoy school. It started with the school shootings and now it's going to our own kids. I think it starts with the parents."

Despite the disruption, school buses arrived as scheduled, and dismissal proceeded as normal. However, the circumstances surrounding the fight and the use of pepper spray are still under investigation. Officials have not yet released details about the severity of injuries or whether any arrests have been made.

In a message sent to families and staff, Principal Elena Villani addressed the incident. She stated that the students involved are now facing disciplinary action and emphasized that physical altercations are a serious violation of the Student Code of Conduct. Villani also noted that the campus is secure and that the instructional day is continuing as normal, although first responders remain present.
