A Legacy of Excellence in Education

In the small town of Grove, Oklahoma, a remarkable educator has left an indelible mark on her students and the community. Donna Deason, a long-time science instructor at the Grove School District, has been recognized for her unwavering commitment to her students and the positive impact she has had both inside and outside the classroom.

Deason teaches eighth-grade general science and eighth-grade Honors Science, and her dedication to her students is evident in her achievements. She has won the Oklahoma State Science and Engineering Fair grand champion title for an unprecedented 19 consecutive years, a testament to her passion for science and her ability to inspire young minds.

“She always goes above and beyond the scope of her job to ensure our students succeed,” said Grove Schools Superintendent Pat Dodson. This sentiment is echoed by school leaders who highlight Deason’s drive to have her students excel at the Oklahoma State Science and Engineering Fair as one of the most significant moments in her career.

With 31 years in the classroom, Deason has become a foundational figure in the Grove School District. In 2002, she was honored with the Grove Education Foundation for Excellence Shining Star Award, a recognition of her outstanding contributions to education.

Teaching Methods That Inspire

Deason’s teaching philosophy centers around empowering her students to take charge of their learning. “I motivate my academic team by modeling, encouraging, and praising,” she explains. Her approach involves allowing students to conduct scientific research independently, which she believes is one of the best gifts she can give a student.

For many of her students, the goal is to participate in the Oklahoma State Science and Engineering Fair held in Stillwater. This event offers more than just competition; it provides students with the opportunity to stay overnight, tour a college, and meet peers from across the state. “Students learn very quickly the enjoyment of walking across the stage and receiving awards,” Deason says.

A Commitment to Innovation

In the classroom, Deason is known for her relentless pursuit of new techniques and strategies to enhance her students’ learning experiences. Her Grand Champion legacy began in 2002, when several Grove students won multiple categories at the fair. When their school’s name was called as the Grand Champion, the entire community erupted in pride.

“It certainly makes you proud of the students and their hard work for being recognized,” Deason reflects. She credits Vic Clouse, the former principal who hired her, and Mindy Collins, the current principal, for her longevity and success at Grove Schools.

“Vic Clouse is the person who has made the biggest impact on my teaching career,” Deason says. She describes him as a “down-to-earth” principal who understood teachers’ diverse personalities and teaching styles. Clouse supported teachers raising small children and emphasized putting family first. He taught Deason the values of fairness, consistency, and hard work.

Mindy Collins, the current Grove Middle School Principal, has worked alongside Deason for almost a quarter of a century. “I was fortunate to spend one year as her co-teacher in science and, for the past six years, to support her as her building principal,” Collins says. “In every role, I have remained in awe of Mrs. Deason’s dedication and passion for education.”

Leadership That Elevates

Collins praises Deason’s leadership, which has elevated the quality of students’ scientific research projects. “Year after year, she seeks additional funding opportunities through grant writing and community partnerships to provide them with even greater learning experiences,” Collins adds.

Deason cites Collins as the “most generous principal I have ever had,” particularly referring to the equipment used in classroom labs and activities. “She supports a learning environment for all students and will go out of her way to help teachers achieve this,” Deason says.

A Lasting Impact

Deason knows that teachers make a difference, often giving struggling students a smile, encouragement, and hope. One such student came to her class about 10 years ago. He arrived in tears after being scolded by an extracurricular instructor for missing class. However, Deason discovered he wasn’t skipping class—he was conducting research at the Senior Citizens’ building.

She facilitated a conversation with the principal to share his side of the story. The student went on to win first place at the Oklahoma State Science and Engineering Fair and first place in the extracurricular activity class competition. “I followed him through college and watched him excel in every activity from leadership to band,” Deason says.

Now immersed in his graduate program in Minnesota, the former student sent Deason a message about how he tried to model her in everything he accomplished in college. “He always said to himself, ‘What would Mrs. Deason do?’” Deason recalls. “I think this was one of the nicest comments anyone ever gave me.”
