Mamdani, who recently secured the Democratic nomination, made this pledge in December 2024, stating that the SRG has incurred significant costs for taxpayers and has been involved in incidents where it has allegedly violated the First Amendment rights of New Yorkers. His comments reflect a broader stance against the police department, which has drawn both support and criticism.

The SRG is a specialized unit within the NYPD responsible for handling large-scale events, civil unrest, and emergencies such as shootings and bank robberies. Their presence at the scene of the recent Park Avenue shooting was critical in containing the situation. However, Mamdani's proposal to disband the group has raised concerns among law enforcement officials and political figures.

Criticism from Law Enforcement and Political Figures

Mamdani faced backlash for his past statements advocating for the "defund the police" movement, particularly during the George Floyd protests in 2020. These remarks have resurfaced in recent discussions about his candidacy, with critics questioning his commitment to public safety.

Following the shooting, Mamdani expressed his condolences, stating he was "heartbroken" over the incident and grateful for the efforts of first responders. However, some within the NYPD have questioned his sincerity, suggesting that his opposition to the SRG stems from its role in managing protests rather than a genuine concern for public safety.

Political figures like US Rep. Elise Stefanik have criticized Mamdani, highlighting his past anti-police sentiments. She shared one of his posts calling for the defunding of the NYPD, labeling him as unfit for the mayoral position.

Governor Hochul Defends Mamdani

In response to these criticisms, Governor Kathy Hochul defended Mamdani, questioning the focus on his past statements. She emphasized the importance of addressing current issues and ensuring public safety, rather than dwelling on historical remarks.

Mamdani also paid tribute to the off-duty NYPD officer who lost his life in the shooting, honoring his legacy and the sacrifices made by those in law enforcement. This gesture, however, has not quelled the concerns raised by critics.

Concerns from Police Unions and Conservative Leaders

Ken Frydman, a Democratic political operative and police union advisor, criticized Mamdani for what he described as a hypocritical approach. He pointed out the contradiction in expressing sympathy for victims while simultaneously advocating for the disbanding of a key police unit.

Gerard Kassar, chairman of the New York State Conservative Party, warned voters about the potential consequences of electing Mamdani. He argued that Mamdani's anti-police rhetoric could lead to a dangerous situation if he were to take control of the NYPD.

Support from Leftist Allies

Despite the controversy, several leftist politicians and allies have supported Mamdani's stance against the SRG. Chi Ossé, a council member in Bed-Stuy, introduced a bill aimed at preventing the SRG from attending protests or "first-amendment events." This initiative has gained support from 24 Democratic sponsors on the council, including Brooklyn Councilwoman Crystal Hudson.

As the mayoral race continues, the debate over the role of the SRG and the future of policing in New York City remains a central issue. The outcome of this election will likely shape the city's approach to public safety and the relationship between law enforcement and the communities they serve.
