Ukraine and Europe Stress the Importance of Unity in Negotiations

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has emphasized that Russia’s strategy continues to be "anti-European," highlighting the need for European unity in any future negotiations aimed at halting Moscow's full-scale war in Ukraine. This message came during a meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Brussels, where the two leaders discussed key issues related to the ongoing conflict.

Zelenskyy reiterated the importance of maintaining the same level of unity among European nations as they had in 2022 when the war began. He stressed that stopping the violence is a priority, noting that Russian President Vladimir Putin does not seem to want an end to the killings. The Ukrainian leader called for a ceasefire as a necessary first step before working on a final deal to end the war.

He also mentioned that while Putin has many demands, the specifics are unclear. Zelenskyy warned that addressing these demands would take time and could not be done under the pressure of military actions. This discussion will likely take place during his upcoming talks with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington.

Initially, Trump had indicated he would discuss a ceasefire with Putin during their meeting in Alaska. However, after the summit, he shifted focus to directly discussing a peace deal without mentioning a ceasefire. This change has raised concerns among Kyiv and its European allies, who fear it may allow Russia more time to continue its attacks while prolonging negotiations with unrealistic demands.

Zelenskyy urged for real negotiations that begin at the current frontline. He argued that the contact line is the best place for discussions, emphasizing the need for swift action to reach a lasting solution.

European Leaders Call for Strong Security Measures

Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission President, highlighted the need for strong security guarantees to protect both Ukraine and Europe. She described Ukraine as needing to become a "steel porcupine," meaning it should be well-prepared and resistant to potential invasions.

Von der Leyen emphasized that Ukraine must maintain its sovereignty and territorial integrity without any restrictions on its armed forces. She also made it clear that decisions regarding territorial concessions must remain solely in the hands of Ukraine and its people. According to her, international borders cannot be changed by force, and such decisions must involve Ukraine directly.

In addition to security measures, Europe plans to continue applying pressure on Russia's war economy. Von der Leyen mentioned that a new package of sanctions is expected to be introduced in September.

International Leaders Prepare for Key Discussions

Zelenskyy arrived in Brussels for meetings with von der Leyen before traveling to Washington for talks with Trump. The Ukrainian president will also participate in a virtual meeting of the Coalition of the Willing, which includes German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Von der Leyen confirmed she will join Zelenskyy at the White House for the meeting with Trump, as requested by the Ukrainian leader. While other European leaders are expected to attend, it remains unclear whether they will travel to Washington or join virtually.

Starmer has confirmed his presence at the meeting, stating that he is ready to support further discussions and reaffirm his commitment to Ukraine. Meanwhile, Merz is also set to travel to the U.S. capital to exchange information with Trump following his meeting with Putin in Alaska.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is also expected to attend, having cut her holiday short to return to Rome. Macron, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, and Finnish President Alexander Stubb have all confirmed their participation.

The leaders aim to ensure coordination between Europe and the United States to achieve a just and lasting peace that protects Ukraine and European security interests. This meeting marks a significant step in international efforts to address the ongoing conflict and find a resolution.
