Zelensky to Bring 6 European Leaders to Trump Meeting

A Historic Meeting in Washington
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump, accompanied by six European and NATO leaders. This gathering represents a significant moment in the ongoing efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. The leaders are showing their support for Zelensky, aiming to present a united front during the high-stakes meeting in Washington.
Trump shared news of the event on his Truth Social account, expressing excitement about hosting so many European leaders at once. He wrote, "Big day at the White House tomorrow. Never had so many European Leaders at one time. My great honor to host them!!!"
A Show of Unity
The European leaders attending the meeting include those from Britain, France, Germany, Italy, and Finland. Their presence alongside Zelensky is intended to ensure a more cooperative environment than the previous encounter in February. During that meeting, tensions flared between Trump and Zelensky in the Oval Office.
Retired French General Dominique Trinquand noted the importance of this show of unity. He said, "It's a power struggle and a position of strength that might work with Trump."
Previous Summit with Putin
Trump recently held a summit with Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, which he described as "productive." However, he admitted that no agreement was reached. "There is no deal until there's a deal," he told reporters after the meeting.
According to Steve Witkoff, the special U.S. envoy to the Middle East, Trump and Putin agreed that the U.S. and its European allies could potentially offer Ukraine a security guarantee similar to NATO’s defense mandate as part of a future deal to end the war. Witkoff called this agreement "game-changing."
Proposals for Ukraine’s Armed Forces
French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized the need for a credible format to strengthen Ukraine's armed forces. He stated, "We need a credible format for the Ukrainian army, that's the first point, and say - we Europeans and Americans - how we'll train them, equip them, and finance this effort in the long-term."
Macron also mentioned the proposal for an allied presence in Ukraine, positioned away from combat zones, to guarantee stability in Kyiv. He suggested that several thousand men on the ground in Ukraine would signify a strong link between the nations involved.
International Perspectives
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen welcomed Trump's willingness to contribute to Article 5-like security guarantees for Ukraine. She added that the coalition of the willing, including the European Union, is ready to do its share.
However, some analysts warn that the coalition might appear overly aggressive, suggesting they are "ganging up on Trump." Neil Melvin, director of international security at the London-based Royal United Services Institute, noted that Trump may not want to be put in a corner.
Zelensky’s Perspective
Zelensky has been emphasizing the crucial role of U.S. and European involvement in the negotiations. He stated, "A security guarantee is a strong army. Only Ukraine can provide that. Only Europe can finance this army, and weapons for this army can be provided by our domestic production and European production."
He also addressed Trump's stance that Russia and Ukraine should negotiate a complete end to the war rather than agreeing to a ceasefire first. Zelensky argued that a ceasefire would allow for discussions on Putin's demands, stating, "It's impossible to do this under the pressure of weapons. Putin does not want to stop the killing, but he must do it."
