YMCA Northwest Facility Opens in September with Enhanced Features

Exciting New Facility Set to Open in Late September

The YMCA is making significant progress on its new Northwest facility, which is set to open its doors to the community in late September. This state-of-the-art space will be located at 5549 Avalon Drive and spans approximately 25 acres of land. The facility aims to bring a fresh approach to wellness, recovery, and family-focused services.

Core Offerings and Community Focus

The new facility will include all of the YMCA’s core offerings, such as cardio and strength training rooms, free group exercise classes, and youth programming. These services are designed to cater to a wide range of age groups and fitness levels, ensuring that everyone in the community can benefit from the amenities available.

Construction is currently in full swing, with dry-wall installation and tile work being completed. Equipment is expected to arrive within the next month, bringing the facility one step closer to its grand opening. The project has been shaped not only by the YMCA's vision but also by the needs and requests of the local neighborhood.

Green Spaces for Outdoor Activities

One of the most notable features of the new facility is its extensive green space. This area will serve as a hub for outdoor activities, including flag football and a catfish camp where kids can learn about water safety, fishing, and canoeing.

Christine Bearden, CEO of the Midland YMCA, explained that the green space was added based on feedback from the community. “One of the requests we received from the neighborhood to the board was that they lacked green space to have their youth leagues practice and things of that nature,” she said. “This wasn’t in the original plan, but because it was a request from the immediate neighborhood, we wanted to be able to demonstrate that we are meeting community needs.”

The green space will include three flag football fields that can also be used for other sports and outdoor activities. Bearden added, “Our after-school programs can utilize it, our adult sports can utilize it, and it can be used for just general recreation. Midland lacks so many good green spaces, and this will just be one more that our community desperately needs.”

Indoor Amenities and Technology

Inside the facility, visitors will find three brand-new indoor pickleball courts, along with a wide range of amenities such as a recovery room and state-of-the-art training equipment. The pickleball courts will also be used for free group classes, promoting community engagement and fitness.

The recovery and wellness room will offer hydromassage chairs, a hydration hub, a coffee bar, and a social area. While the facility will not have designated locker rooms, there will be restrooms and currency lockers available for members’ convenience.

The cardio space will house treadmills, ellipticals, Stairmasters, and more. The strength training room will feature advanced equipment that incorporates biomechanics, AI-driven coaching, and interactive touchscreens. Amy Evans, senior director of operations, explained, “The technology helps you count, tells you if you’re going too fast, or just tracks all your results. It is a great tool for beginners or even someone that is working out and needs to be challenged.”

Outdoor Fitness and Youth Programming

The weight room will also include freeweights such as dumbbells, bars, and plates, and will have a door leading to an outdoor workout area. “Outdoor fitness will also be incorporated, so as a member you can go from outside to inside,” Bearden said. “We will have a structure where you can do kettlebell exercises or pull ups.” Evans added that the outdoor space will be like a jungle gym for adults, offering a unique and engaging environment for fitness enthusiasts.

The facility will also have designated rooms for youth programming, supporting the YMCA’s after-school and summer programs. Evans noted that the new facility will help alleviate the pressure on downtown locations. Bearden added that the new facility has already helped reduce the waiting list for after-school programs for children.

Membership Opportunities

The YMCA is projected to open in late September and is already taking membership registrations. A special sign-up offer is available for charter members of the Northwest YMCA, waiving the joiner fee and providing complimentary access during the month of September. The membership will also include access to both the Downtown and the Northwest YMCA, offering patrons the flexibility to use both facilities.
