xAI to Boost Memphis Schools with HVAC and Field Upgrades Near Supercomputer Site

xAI's Initiative to Support Memphis Schools
xAI, a tech company with a growing presence in Memphis, is making significant strides in supporting local education by planning to donate infrastructure improvements to four schools in the area. This initiative has been approved by the Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) board with a vote of 7-2. The proposal involves providing in-kind donations for various upgrades at John P Freeman Optional School, Westwood High School, Mitchell High School, and Fairley High School.
At the start of a meeting on July 29, MSCS board member Amber Huett-Garcia highlighted the potential benefits of this partnership. She mentioned that the district faces a combined deferred maintenance backlog of nearly $4.2 billion, and this opportunity could help jumpstart investments in neighborhoods and regions of Memphis.
A letter sent to interim Superintendent Roderick Richmond from xAI executive Brent Mayo outlined the proposed upgrades. These include HVAC work, athletic field improvements, and the development of chemistry and technology labs. The letter stated that xAI would assume all financial responsibilities for these actions without any exchange of funds between the company and the school district.
The memorandum of understanding allows xAI to proceed with the work without needing board approval for each action. Although some work has already been completed at these schools, the proposed future projects exceed the school district's in-kind donation policy limit, which typically requires board approval.
Proposed Projects
In the letter, Mayo expressed interest in replacing or repairing various aspects of the four school facilities. The projects range from general beautification to the development of chemistry labs. Three of the schools are high schools, while John P Freeman is a K-8 optional school, requiring students to apply and meet specific academic criteria for admission.
Some of the key upgrades include:
- Painting of hallways, common areas, and classrooms
- Lighting upgrades and modernization
- HVAC/AC units
- Turf or natural grass football, baseball, soccer, and open play fields with associated bleachers
- Athletic track
- Scoreboard
- Indoor basketball court with associated bleachers
- Weight room and exercise area
- Chemistry and technology labs with associated materials and resources
Community Reactions
The school board members had mixed reactions to the idea of xAI doing the work for the school district. Commissioner Keith Williams, representing the targeted schools, emphasized the "mountain of resistance" in the communities around the supercomputers. He warned about potential long-term consequences if the school system supports the initiative.
On the other hand, Melvin D. Watkins, Jr., pastor of Mount Vernon Baptist Church in Westwood, noted that not all members of the community oppose xAI's presence. He highlighted that some residents support the investment and see it as a positive change for their schools.
Commissioner Natalie McKinney questioned the timing of the proposal and the future partnership between the district and xAI. Bobby White, the Greater Memphis Chamber's chief public policy officer, explained that the recent approval of natural gas turbines influenced the timing of the proposal. He also mentioned that board members had visited the site during the meeting.
Commissioners Michelle McKissack and Sable Otey expressed their support, stating that xAI genuinely cares about the communities and children. McKissack urged other businesses and leaders to take notice and follow suit.
