Box Office Projections for Fantastic Four: First Steps

As the Marvel reboot of Fantastic Four prepares for its opening weekend, there are promising signs that the film could outperform some of its competitors. While earlier reports suggested that the success of Superman 2025 might have slightly reduced the momentum for Fantastic Four: First Steps, a new analysis highlights several factors that could lead to strong box office performance both domestically and internationally.

In the United States, Fantastic Four: First Steps is expected to earn approximately $136 million during its opening weekend, with projections ranging between $125.1 million and $145 million. This estimate comes from a July 23 report by Box Office Theory, which suggests the film is leaning toward the higher end of the range due to its broad appeal and positive critical reception, as reflected in its 85% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes. Additionally, Deadline reports that the movie is tracking toward earning between $190 million and $210 million worldwide during its three-day opening period.

The detailed breakdown from Box Office Theory indicates that the film could make $25.5 million on Thursday, $37.3 million on Friday, $39.5 million on Saturday, and $33.5 million on Sunday. Comparatively, Superman 2025 was estimated to earn $135 million during its opening weekend, just $1 million less than Fantastic Four. If Fantastic Four meets the projected $25 million on Thursday, it would surpass Superman’s $22.5 million for its own Thursday release, marking the highest Thursday gross since Deadpool & Wolverine earned $38.5 million in July 2024.

Despite these positive indicators, traditional industry tracking still shows that Superman 2025 performed slightly better in terms of overall opening weekend revenue. The DC reboot earned $220 million worldwide during its initial run, compared to the projected $190-210 million for Fantastic Four: First Steps.

However, Fantastic Four has several advantages over its competitor. Pre-sales for the film are currently pacing ahead of all other 2025 releases, including Lilo & Stitch, A Minecraft Movie, and Superman. The audience for Fantastic Four is primarily male-driven but also skews more favorably toward those under age 35 than films like Superman, Thunderbolts, and Captain America: Brave New World.

Marvel has faced challenges in creating a major hit in Phase Four and Five after Avengers: Endgame, but the studio believes that the Fantastic Four brand remains strong when the right film is released. Fans have long awaited the inclusion of the First Family in the MCU, and the film’s solid cast, led by Pedro Pascal, along with a crowd-pleasing and family-friendly storyline, is expected to contribute to its success.

While the film will face competition from Superman 2025, it is anticipated that Fantastic Four will take over premium viewing formats such as IMAX upon its release. This could lead to a significant drop in Superman's domestic sales, potentially falling by 60% to $23.5 million for the upcoming weekend. In the long term, both films may eventually coexist during the summer months.

James Gunn, the director of Superman 2025, had previously suggested that the film’s underperformance overseas could be attributed to anti-American sentiment. It remains to be seen whether this trend applies to Fantastic Four: First Steps as well.
