The Final Showdown: 3Quency Claims Victory in "Building the Band" Season 1

Netflix's experimental music competition show, Building the Band, has reached its conclusion with the announcement of its first winning group. In the Season 1 finale, which premiered on Wednesday, July 23, the girl group 3Quency emerged as the champions, securing the coveted title and a $500,000 prize.

The trio—Nori Moore, Wennely Quezada, and Brianna Mazzola—captivated the celebrity judges and earned their place as the winners of the series. Their journey to victory was marked by growth, resilience, and a strong sense of chemistry that shone through during their final performance.

Judge Nicole Scherzinger praised the group, saying, “They have proven to us that they are ready. (They are) a band that has shown so much growth, the band that pulled out all the stops tonight.” This sentiment echoed among the other judges, including Kelly Rowland and the late Liam Payne, who played a significant role in shaping the contestants' performances throughout the season.

A Close Competition

3Quency faced tough competition from SZN4, the only mixed-gender group in the finale. Comprised of Donzell Taggart, Aaliyah Rose, Cameron Goode, and Katie Roeder, SZN4 had been a standout contender. At one point, Kelly Rowland even predicted that SZN4 would win after their emotional performance of Rag’n’Bone Man’s “Human,” which brought both the judges and host AJ McLean to tears.

However, 3Quency ultimately edged out their rivals. The decision came after the judges voted off Iconyx, also known as Soulidified, allowing 3Quency and SZN4 to advance to the final round. The trio’s final song was a cover of Mariah Carey’s “Always Be My Baby,” showcasing their vocal strength and stage presence.

Despite the close race, 3Quency’s performance proved to be the deciding factor. As Nori Moore shared in an interview with USA TODAY, the group has since grown closer, describing themselves as “overly comfortable” with each other. Months after filming, the trio continues to stay connected through FaceTime movie nights, group trips, and constant communication.

Lessons from the Judges

The judges provided valuable guidance that helped 3Quency reach the finish line. Nicole Scherzinger encouraged the group to maintain eye contact, while Liam Payne advised them to “claim your presence on stage.” Kelly Rowland’s advice was more straightforward: “just breathe.”

Brianna Mazzola reflected on the group’s formation, saying, “Once we locked in on three, we were still open to anything shifting it, but three just felt so good. Our chemistry felt so strong.” This sense of unity and trust was evident in their performances and contributed significantly to their success.

A Tribute to Liam Payne

Liam Payne’s involvement in the show added a unique dimension to the competition. Known for his time as a member of One Direction, Payne often drew comparisons between the contestants and his own experience. In one memorable moment, he joked about the similarities between Iconyx and One Direction, offering words of encouragement to the group after they were eliminated.

Payne’s final appearance on Building the Band was taped in September 2024, just weeks before his untimely death on October 16. He passed away after falling from a third-floor balcony at a Buenos Aires hotel. His presence on the show left a lasting impact on the contestants and fans alike.

The Journey Continues

While 3Quency has taken home the prize, the story of Building the Band is far from over. Other groups that didn’t make it to the finale, such as Midnight Til Morning, Siren Society, and Sweet Seduction, also showcased talent and potential. However, only 3Quency managed to capture the judges’ hearts and secure the ultimate victory.

As the group prepares for the next chapter of their musical journey, their win serves as a testament to hard work, dedication, and the power of collaboration. With their newfound success, 3Quency is poised to take the music industry by storm.
