Republican Representative Faces Backlash for Advocating Unconstitutional Third Term for Trump

A prominent Republican politician has once again sparked controversy after repeatedly calling for former U.S. President Donald Trump to serve a third term in office, which would violate the current constitutional limit of two terms for any president.

Andy Ogles, the representative for Tennessee, has been vocal about his support for allowing Trump to serve an additional term, despite the fact that this would require amending the 22nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. This amendment explicitly states that no person can be elected to the presidency more than twice.

Amending the 22nd Amendment

In January, Ogles introduced a resolution aimed at modifying the 22nd Amendment to permit Trump to serve a third term. In a statement released at the time, he argued that Trump's leadership was essential for reversing what he described as the nation’s decline and restoring America to its former glory.

Ogles claimed that Trump was the only leader capable of addressing the challenges facing the country and emphasized the need for him to have more time in office. He stated that the proposed amendment would allow Trump to serve three terms, ensuring continued leadership that he believed was necessary for the nation.

This proposal is currently under review by the House Committee on the Judiciary.

Controversial Comments About New York Mayoral Candidate

As New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani gained traction and won the Democratic primary, Ogles made headlines for his comments on social media. On June 26, he shared a letter sent to Attorney General Pam Bondi, urging an investigation into whether Mamdani should face denaturalization proceedings.

Ogles referred to Mamdani as “Zohran ‘little muhammad’ Mamdani” and called for his deportation. His remarks were widely criticized, with Democrat representative Shri Thanedar of Michigan filing a resolution to censure Ogles for what he described as racist, Islamophobic, and anti-immigrant rhetoric.

Another resolution, introduced by New York Democrat Richie Torres, also condemned Ogles for a separate tweet in which he labeled House Democrats leader Hakeem Jeffries as “discount dollar store Obama.” Both resolutions are now being considered by the House Committee on Ethics.

Calls for Trump to Serve Longer in Office

More recently, Ogles has further escalated his stance by suggesting that Trump should be allowed to “run D.C. as long as he wants.” This comment has drawn significant backlash from both political opponents and constituents.

Several individuals have taken to social media to express their disapproval, with one user reminding Ogles of his oath to defend the U.S. Constitution. Tennessee politician Justin Jones called the tweet “embarrassing,” while former Ohio state senator Nina Turner argued it should be grounds for Ogles' removal from Congress.

Journalist Mehdi Hasan commented that such statements reveal the growing authoritarian tendencies within the GOP, stating that there are no illusions left about the party's direction.

Broader Implications and Reactions

The ongoing debate over Trump's potential third term highlights the deepening divisions within American politics. While some Republicans continue to support Trump's leadership, others are increasingly concerned about the implications of his influence and the potential erosion of democratic norms.

The situation has also raised questions about the role of political figures in upholding constitutional principles. As the discussions continue, the public remains divided on whether such a move would be in the best interest of the country or if it represents a dangerous shift toward authoritarianism.
