White House Boosts DC Law Enforcement as Trump Threatens National Guard Deployment

Increased Federal Law Enforcement Presence in Washington, DC
The Trump administration is reportedly planning to boost the presence of federal law enforcement in Washington, D.C., on Thursday and Friday. This move comes in response to an assault on a well-known former Department of Government Efficiency staffer over the weekend. According to three sources familiar with the plan, the increased presence will involve officers from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the National Guard, and local Department of Homeland Security agents.
One of the sources mentioned that local federal agents in the area have been instructed to be prepared for deployment. A senior White House official stated that while the assault was a factor, the decision to increase the law enforcement presence is also a follow-up to President Donald Trump’s executive order titled “Making the District of Columbia Safe and Beautiful.” The order, signed in March, aims to ensure strict enforcement of quality of life, nuisance, and public-safety laws, including crimes such as assault, battery, larceny, graffiti, and public intoxication.
“The assault just further underscores the need for a greater law enforcement presence in DC,” the official said. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasized that Washington, D.C., is an amazing city but has long struggled with petty and violent crime. She added that President Trump is committed to making the capital safer and more beautiful for residents, lawmakers, and visitors.
Operational details of the increased law enforcement presence are still being finalized as of Wednesday night. DISCOVER TREND has reached out to the office of DC Mayor Muriel Bowser for comment.
Despite Trump’s repeated claims about rising crime in the district, preliminary year-to-date crime data from the DC Police show that 2025 crime numbers are lower than last year. As of Wednesday, violent crime is down by 26% compared to the same period last year.
Earlier on Wednesday, Trump indicated he is considering taking over the DC Police Department and potentially deploying the National Guard to the city in response to recent crime. He told reporters in the Oval Office, “We’re going to beautify the city. We’re going to make it beautiful. And what a shame, the rate of crime, the rate of muggings, killings and everything else. We’re not going to let it, and that includes bringing in the National Guard maybe very quickly too.”
The DC National Guard consists of more than 2,700 soldiers and airmen and reports only to the President of the United States. Trump’s threat to bring in the National Guard comes after he deployed thousands of Guard members to Los Angeles in June in response to protests over immigration enforcement. Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom criticized the move and urged Trump to “send everyone home now.”
This year, Trump has also suggested that the federal government should take over the governance of the District of Columbia. He told reporters aboard Air Force One in February, “I think that we should govern District of Columbia. It’s so important, the DC situation. I think that we should run it strong, run it with law and order.”
As the situation develops, the focus remains on how the increased federal presence will impact the city and its residents. The White House continues to emphasize its commitment to improving safety and quality of life in the nation's capital.
