The Rise and Fall of Bam Margera’s "Jackass" Era

Bam Margera first gained notoriety in the early 2000s as a skateboarder, brother of CKY band member Jesse Margera, and creator of amateur prank and stunt videos. His unique style and fearless attitude eventually led him to join forces with Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, Ryan Dunn, and others on the MTV series “Jackass.” This marked a turning point in his career, propelling him into the spotlight as a full-fledged celebrity.

Despite some tensions with his “Jackass” co-stars—particularly with Knoxville—Margera remained a core member of the group through the TV series, the first three films, and various other projects. However, the production of “Jackass Forever” brought significant strain to the group dynamics, ultimately leading to a public split between Margera and the “Jackass” crew. The fallout from this break-up, along with legal disputes with Paramount and a near-death experience due to complications from COVID-19, made his personal and professional life quite challenging for several years.

In recent times, Margera has experienced a positive shift, both mentally and physically. He has returned to skateboarding, which naturally sparked questions about a potential “Jackass” reunion. However, Margera is clear in his stance: he is completely done with “Jackass” and all those involved, indefinitely.

A Tumultuous Relationship with “Jackass”

According to Margera, his time on “Jackass” was anything but smooth. He claims that during the preparation for “Jackass Forever,” he felt tortured on set while going through rehab. He was also forced to sign a questionable “wellness agreement” and had his health conditions used against him, which he believes contributed to his eventual firing from the film. None of his contributions were included in the final version of the movie.

Johnny Knoxville and “Jackass” director and co-creator Jeff Tremaine have denied Margera’s account of events. They maintain that they acted in his best interest and followed the same rules as everyone else. In a 2021 GQ interview, Knoxville responded briefly to the situation, stating, “I don’t want to get into public back-and-forth with Bam. I just want him to get better.”

Despite these conflicting narratives, Margera remains firm in his decision to walk away from “Jackass.” In a July 2025 interview with DBLTAP, he expressed his feelings about a possible reunion: “The damage has been done with that,” he said, adding, “It’s not the same anymore, and you couldn’t offer me enough money to be a part of that again.”

No Plans for a “Viva La Bam” Reboot

Another project that has drawn attention is “Viva La Bam,” Margera’s mid-2000s MTV series. One of the lesser-known facts about the show is that it actually ran longer than “Jackass.” It also showcased Margera’s ability to lead a successful venture without relying on his “Jackass” associates. This separation from the “Jackass” crew allowed him to explore new creative avenues.

However, when asked about a potential reboot of “Viva La Bam,” Margera was quick to dismiss the idea. In an interview with CinemaBlend, he said, “If we did a ‘Viva la Bam’ [reboot], I would have to move back in with my parents and re-mess with ‘em after giving them a 15-year break. It would just be weird.”

Future Projects and Collaborations

While Margera has ruled out a return to “Jackass” or “Viva La Bam,” he is open to participating in revivals of other projects. In July 2025, the video game “Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4” was released as a combined remake of the original games. Margera, who was a playable character in the earlier versions, had his current likeness scanned so that he could be included in the remake. This was done at the insistence of Tony Hawk himself, showing that Margera still has a place in the world of skateboarding and gaming.
