Completion of Road Work on I-65 S in Louisville

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet recently completed critical road work on Interstate 65 South (I-65 S) in downtown Louisville. The project focused on a section of the highway that runs from the end of the Kennedy Bridge to the "Hospital Curve" area near the Muhammad Ali Blvd. overpass. The work was finalized on Monday, two days ahead of schedule, marking an early success for the transportation department.

This particular stretch of I-65 S has long been a concern for drivers due to recurring issues with potholes and road surface degradation. The recent project aimed to address these problems by replacing the "bridge expansion joints" along the Hospital Curve. According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC), this replacement is expected to prevent future pothole formation in the area, which has historically caused inconvenience and safety concerns for motorists.

In addition to the joint replacement, the weekend work also included the application of a "high-friction surface treatment" from the end of the Kennedy Bridge to the Witherspoon Street overpass. This treatment is designed to improve road traction, particularly in areas where vehicle accidents have occurred more frequently.

One of the key locations where this treatment was applied is the Jefferson Street Downtown offramp. This area has seen five semi tractor-trailer crashes since May 3, the day of the Kentucky Derby. The high-friction surface treatment is intended to reduce the risk of such incidents by providing better grip for large vehicles, especially during adverse weather conditions or when making sharp turns.
