Weapons stays on top in second weekend as Nobody 2 struggles

Box Office Highlights: A Strong Debut and Diverse Film Lineup
This past weekend, the box office saw a mix of strong performances from new releases and established titles. The horror film Weapons made a powerful debut, securing the top spot and maintaining its lead during the second week. It outperformed other notable films such as Freakier Friday and the action sequel Nobody 2. The success of Weapons was driven by positive audience reviews and viral social media trends that helped draw in large crowds.
In its first weekend, Weapons grossed $25 million across 3,450 theaters in North America. This represents a 43% drop from its opening weekend, which is typical for many films after their initial release. However, the film’s strong reception ensured continued interest among moviegoers.
A Competitive Second Place
Freakier Friday, which had a double premiere this weekend, managed to hold onto the second position with $14.5 million in domestic earnings. The film's staying power comes at a time when the box office is experiencing a slower-than-usual period, according to Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for Comscore. He noted that this year’s summer season is unlikely to reach the $4 billion benchmark, but it has offered a diverse range of movies that appeal to different audiences.
Dergarabedian emphasized that the current slate of films includes a wide variety of genres and demographics, making it an eclectic mix that can attract almost any viewer. “It’s just that eclectic mix of films with appeal to every demographic,” he said.
Action Sequel Challenges the Top
Nobody 2, the R-rated action sequel starring Bob Odenkirk, took third place with $9.25 million in its opening weekend. The film follows the success of the original Nobody, released in 2021. In the sequel, Odenkirk’s character, Hutch Mansell, returns for a family vacation that quickly turns into a dangerous situation. Jim Orr, president of domestic distributions at Universal Pictures, expressed hope that the film’s high audience score (89%) and CinemaScore (B+) would indicate a long and successful run at the box office.
Other Notable Performances
The superhero film The Fantastic Four: First Steps came in fourth with $8.8 million in its fourth weekend. Despite a strong opening of $118 million, the film has struggled to maintain momentum at the box office. Another sequel, The Bad Guys 2, took fifth place with $7.5 million during its third weekend in theaters.
International films also made a significant impact in the top 15 this weekend. Coolie, an Indian action thriller, debuted in the 10th position, while War 2, another Indian film, landed at the 11th spot. Additionally, the domestic re-release of Shin Godzilla, a Japanese film that originally premiered in 2016, came in at the 12th spot.
