Walmart Shooting Leaves 11 Injured, 6 in Critical Condition, Suspect Charged with Terrorism

A Violent Attack at a Michigan Walmart
On a seemingly ordinary Saturday, an act of violence shattered the calm of a Walmart in Michigan. Eleven people were stabbed during the incident, marking one of the most alarming events in the area. The chaos began when the suspect, Bradford James Gille, 42, of Afton, Michigan, launched his attack inside the store. Fortunately, the actions of several brave citizens played a crucial role in preventing the suspect from escaping.
Munson Healthcare reported that initially, six victims were in critical condition and five in serious condition. By Sunday afternoon, the situation had improved slightly, with two individuals in serious condition, eight in fair condition, and one person having been released. These numbers highlight the severity of the attack and the ongoing efforts by medical professionals to care for the injured.
Gille is now facing serious charges, including one count of terrorism and 11 counts of assault with intent to murder. His criminal history includes previous arrests for criminal mischief and drug offenses. In 2014, he was sentenced to 49 days in a Florida jail following a vandalism conviction. Despite this, the community has praised the quick thinking and bravery of those who intervened during the attack.
Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea commended the bystanders for their courage. “It’s not very often that we have citizens that are willing to step up and take action,” he said, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in such crises.
A Family Vacation Turned Tragic
Matt Kolakowski and Chris O’Brien were in Traverse City for a family vacation when they stopped at the Walmart to purchase supplies. Kolakowski's 13-year-old daughter and her friend were with them. What started as a routine shopping trip quickly turned into a nightmare when screams erupted in the store.
Kolakowski, a former Marine, described the moment when a store employee yelled, “He’s got a knife!” after several people near the checkout area were stabbed. He immediately instructed his daughter and her friend to stay put while he and O’Brien chased the suspect.
“I thought to myself, ‘Well, I don’t got no weapon, so what am I going to do?’ So, I just grabbed an empty grocery cart and just took off after him as hard as I could,” Kolakowski recalled. He witnessed two victims being stabbed as the suspect fled the store.
In the parking lot, Kolakowski used the grocery cart to try and stop the suspect. Although he managed to hit the attacker in the ankle, the suspect managed to avoid being struck. A chase through the parking lot followed.
“He was screaming something about him being a soldier, and that everybody in Walmart were bad people,” Kolakowski said. “His eyes were just bulging out of his head.”
A Brave Stand Against Violence
Another bystander, who later revealed himself to be a Marine, drew his gun. “The other Marine told me that he just went shooting at a range, and he forgot to take his pistol off his hip,” Kolakowski said. This unexpected turn of events led the attacker to drop the knife.
Kolakowski then held the suspect down until law enforcement arrived. “I just turned into somebody that I haven’t been in a long time and just stayed on top of him until the deputy ran up and jumped on top of him with a rifle in his face, and I helped the deputy arrest him,” he said.
After subduing the suspect, Kolakowski assisted in treating the wounded in the chaotic scene. “It was just mass panic in the parking lot – ambulances, lights everywhere, sirens everywhere, blood everywhere, people getting loaded up on carts, put in ambulances,” he described. “It was quite the rush.”
O’Brien returned inside to check on Kolakowski’s daughter. “When I walked back in, it was an absolute nightmare,” he said. “It was blood everywhere.”
This tragic event serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of life and the importance of community resilience in times of crisis.
