Preparing for the First Year: A New Beginning for Educators

At the Extraco Events Center in Waco, Texas, a sense of anticipation and eagerness filled the air as first-year teachers gathered with seasoned educators and administrators for the New Teacher Launch. This two-day event is designed to equip new teachers with the knowledge, skills, and support they need to succeed in their first year within the Waco Independent School District (WISD).

The program covers a wide range of topics, including district expectations, classroom planning strategies, and essential processes that new teachers must understand. It's not just about preparing for the academic year; it's also about building a strong foundation for a successful teaching career.

A Homecoming with Purpose

Among the attendees was Maqrquivion Williams, a native of Waco and a proud alumnus of Waco High School. His journey back to his hometown is driven by a mission to give back to the community that shaped him.

Williams shared how his experiences, from playing college football to serving in the military, inspired him to return to Waco and become an educator. “The consistency and discipline I learned were crucial for my success,” he said. “I want to pass on those lessons to the students in my community.”

He credits his sixth-grade teacher, Mary Evans, for sparking his passion for teaching. “She showed me the impact a teacher can have on students’ lives. Coming back to Waco High School was a natural choice for me.”

Despite being a first-time teacher, Williams isn’t intimidated. Instead, he’s excited to be a mentor for students who will walk the same halls he once did. “I want to be that role model for them,” he said.

Experience That Shapes the Future

The energy and enthusiasm of new teachers are matched by the wisdom of experienced educators like Walter Mae King, who has spent 48 years in the classroom. Her journey into teaching began at a young age when she was just nine years old.

“I remember doing a vegetable activity with my classmates, and I ended up teaching them without realizing it,” King recalled. “When the teacher saw my work, she told me I would be a great teacher one day. From that moment, I knew this was my path.”

King expressed her excitement for each new group of teachers and emphasized the importance of support. “There will be challenges, but you’re never alone. There are counselors, experienced teachers, and a whole community ready to help you through your first year.”

She added, “If you make it through the first year, you’ll be set for the rest of your career.”

A Supportive Community

For these first-year teachers, the New Teacher Launch offers more than just training—it provides a network of support and inspiration. They enter the classroom knowing they are part of a larger community that values education and is committed to helping them succeed.

From seasoned mentors to enthusiastic newcomers, the event highlights the collaborative spirit that defines the Waco ISD. It’s a reminder that teaching is not just a profession, but a calling—one that requires dedication, passion, and a willingness to grow.

As the new teachers prepare to step into their classrooms, they carry with them the knowledge, encouragement, and resources needed to make a difference in the lives of their students. The journey ahead may be challenging, but with the right support, it’s also full of promise.
