Waco ISD Kicks Off School Year with New Teacher Launch

Preparing for the First Year of Teaching in Waco ISD
The excitement and nerves were palpable at the BASE event held at the Extraco Events Center in Waco, Texas. This two-day gathering brought together first-year teachers with seasoned educators and administrators as part of the New Teacher Launch program. Designed to prepare incoming teachers for their first year in Waco Independent School District (Waco ISD), the event focused on setting clear expectations, providing practical classroom planning strategies, and offering insights into district processes.
Among the attendees was Maqrquivion Williams, a Waco native and proud alumnus of Waco High School. His journey back to his hometown is not just a return but a mission to share the lessons he learned during his time there. After leaving Waco High as a senior, Williams went on to play college football and later served in the military. These experiences inspired him to come back and teach the values he was instilled with—consistency, discipline, and the importance of community support.
“I’ve always believed that if I can serve my community, that’s what I’m meant to do,” Williams shared. “Waco High gave me that opportunity.” He credits his sixth-grade teacher, Mary Evans, for sparking his passion for teaching. As his math teacher, she showed him the impact educators can have on students’ lives, which motivated him to return to Waco High School.
Despite being a first-time teacher, Williams isn’t nervous about stepping into the classroom. Instead, he feels a deep sense of purpose in becoming a mentor for students who will walk the same halls he once did. His enthusiasm reflects the broader sentiment among new teachers, many of whom are eager to make a difference in their students’ lives.
This spirit of dedication also resonates with experienced educators like Walter Mae King, who has been teaching for 48 years. Her dream of becoming a teacher began at a young age, when she was just nine years old. She recalls an early experience where she led a classroom activity involving vegetables. The teacher later praised her work, saying, “You’re going to be a great teacher one day.” That moment solidified her path in education.
King continues to find joy in guiding new teachers each year. She emphasizes the importance of perseverance and the support system available within the district. “There will be challenges, but stick with it,” she advises. “There are teachers, counselors, and mentors who are here to help you through your first year. If you can get through that, you’ll be set for the rest of your career.”
The New Teacher Launch is more than just an orientation—it’s a celebration of growth, community, and the shared goal of shaping future generations. For these first-year teachers, the support they receive from experienced colleagues and the inspiration they draw from their own journeys will be invaluable as they begin their teaching careers.
As they step into classrooms across Waco ISD, these educators carry with them the knowledge, encouragement, and passion needed to make a lasting impact. Their stories highlight the enduring power of education and the vital role teachers play in transforming lives.
