Virginia Republicans Face Growing Concerns Over Gubernatorial Nominee

Virginia Republicans are experiencing a wave of uncertainty regarding their gubernatorial nominee, Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears. The party is witnessing internal turmoil, with key members of her campaign stepping down and a significant gap in public support between Earle-Sears and her Democratic opponent, Rep. Abigail Spanberger. This situation has led to a sense of panic among party loyalists, who fear that not only will Earle-Sears lose the race, but she may also negatively impact other Republican candidates on the ballot.

Both Earle-Sears and Spanberger advanced through their respective primaries without strong opposition, as other candidates either withdrew or failed to meet ballot requirements. However, winning over just their base voters is insufficient for success in the general election. In a state where former Vice President Kamala Harris won by approximately six points, and Governor Glenn Youngkin, a Republican, was re-elected, the challenge lies in appealing to independent and moderate voters.

A poll conducted in late May showed Spanberger leading by 17 points, highlighting her strong favorability ratings and her reputation as a moderate Democrat willing to critique her own party. This strength is contrasted with the challenges faced by Earle-Sears, whose campaign is struggling with poor fundraising and a lack of momentum.

The situation has become increasingly dire, with several top campaign staff members leaving. Earle-Sears recently asked her campaign manager, Will Archer, to step down, following the exit of the political director, Richard Wagner. Archer, a pastor with no prior political experience, had drawn criticism from fellow Republicans for his appointment. His role within the campaign is expected to change moving forward.

Fundraising is another major concern for the Earle-Sears campaign. According to the latest report, Spanberger is outperforming her by a 2-to-1 margin. This financial disadvantage is exacerbating fears among Virginia Republicans that Earle-Sears could negatively affect other down-ballot races in November.

A report by Julia Manchester at The Hill highlighted the growing anxiety within the party, with one anonymous operative calling the campaign “a disaster.” Another strategist expressed disappointment, noting the lack of experience on Earle-Sears’ team. They emphasized that while it is easy to win in wave years, competitive races require a more aggressive approach.

John Fredericks, a conservative talk show host and former state chair for Trump’s campaigns, criticized the campaign as “a dreadful operation,” describing it as “a clown car.” He suggested that the only hope for Earle-Sears is for outgoing Governor Glenn Youngkin to take over the campaign. Without such intervention, he predicted that both Earle-Sears and the entire Republican ticket would face a significant defeat.

The potential fallout extends beyond the gubernatorial race. There are concerns that a loss in this race could hurt other Republican candidates, particularly Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares, who is seen as a strong contender. Although Miyares currently trails his Democratic opponent, he has a substantial war chest compared to Earle-Sears. However, both are far behind Spanberger, who has a much larger financial advantage.

National GOP groups are also showing little optimism for Earle-Sears’ chances. A report by Politico’s Jonathan Martin indicated that Republicans are panicking over the governor’s race and debating how much they can afford to invest in a losing proposition. The funding disparity is especially concerning, as off-off year elections often see donors reduce their contributions when they perceive candidates as weak.

Earle-Sears’ reluctance to engage in fundraising efforts or make high-profile political calls has further complicated matters. She has not reached out to some of the most reliable donors or key figures like Chris LaCivita, Trump’s campaign co-manager. Despite meeting privately with Trump earlier this year, the president has yet to endorse her, which stems from her criticisms of him during his two terms.

The overall sentiment among Virginia Republicans is one of dread, with fears that the entire statewide ticket could be lost. This could lead to a deeper minority in the House of Delegates and prompt an early political triage to determine which races can still be salvaged.
