Video shows suspect shooting at Westfield officers before manhunt

A Close Call in Westfield
A tense and dangerous situation unfolded in Westfield, Indiana, as a gunman opened fire on police officers during a pursuit that lasted several hours. Video footage from a home surveillance camera captured the critical moment when the suspect took aim at law enforcement, leading to an intense manhunt.
The incident began when police pursued a suspect down Dan Patch Lane, a quiet neighborhood street. The suspect eventually crashed his car into a ditch near a residential area and then fired shots at the officers. According to Jason Webster, the property owner, the camera footage shows that as soon as the officers stopped and asked the suspect to put his hands up, he fired three shots.
“I don’t know if you could be proud of a trailer, but awesome, I’m so glad nobody was hurt,” Webster said. He explained that one of the bullets hit the side of his trailer, and the diamond plating on the structure stopped it from penetrating, potentially saving an officer’s life.
Webster found his property surrounded by yellow tape and police during the active manhunt. The suspect had fled along the tree line after the initial encounter, and the video showed the officers asking the suspect to show his hands before and after the shooting. The officers took cover, with one running toward the danger without returning fire.
“I’m glad they chose to be cautious because that could’ve potentially hit a lot of other people and vehicles on the highway,” said Webster, whose property is located next to US 31.
Westfield police revealed that the suspect, 25-year-old John Holden, refused to pull over for a traffic stop, which led to the chase. After disappearing, an extensive search was conducted, prompting neighbors to lock their doors and stay inside until Holden was located in a nearby field two and a half hours later, still armed.
For the safety of officers and the community, the department has chosen to withhold certain operational details. Assistant Police Chief Billy Adams addressed the media, stating that they would refer questions to the Hamilton County Prosecutor’s Office. However, he shared a written statement emphasizing the bravery and restraint shown by the officers.
“We understand this was a terrifying situation for the entire community. A person made the decision to flee from police, fire at officers, and run through a quiet Westfield neighborhood, putting lives at risk. We want to assure our residents that our officers train for these scenarios and acted quickly to protect the public. We’re incredibly thankful that no one was hurt and that this ended with the suspect in custody. Our officers showed courage and restraint in the face of real danger, and we’re proud of their response.”
The department also confirmed that the initiating officer sustained a non-life-threatening injury to his hand during the gunfire but was treated and released on scene.
“Honestly, I think as crazy as the situation was, it ended as well as we could’ve asked for,” Webster added.
Online jail records indicate that John Holden was preliminarily charged with several felonies, including attempted murder and resisting police. Formal charges have not yet been filed, as the Hamilton County Prosecutor’s Office requested a 72-hour hold.
