Surveillance Video Reveals Disturbing Details of Shooting in Riverview Hotel Parking Lot
New surveillance footage from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has provided a chilling glimpse into a recent shooting that took place in the parking lot of a Riverview hotel. The incident, which occurred outside the Uptown Suites Extended Stay Hotel, involved a 37-year-old man named Jasheed Scatliffe-Kalunda, who is now facing serious criminal charges.
According to the sheriff’s office, the events unfolded when Scatliffe-Kalunda approached Cameron Williams’ vehicle and opened fire. The video shows the suspect running toward the car and firing multiple shots. However, his gun appeared to jam, which he managed to fix before firing again. Investigators noted that a total of nine shots were fired at the vehicle during the incident.
Court records reveal that ten spent 9mm Luger casings were recovered from the scene, along with one live round. This suggests that the shooting was both intentional and dangerous, with the potential for significant harm.
Deputies later conducted a traffic stop at the Splash Car Wash and Lube on the 800 block of Bloomingdale Avenue. They found Scatliffe-Kalunda sitting in a car with a woman in the passenger seat. He consented to a search of his vehicle, where he admitted to being at the hotel earlier that day and driving into the parking lot moments before the shooting. However, he denied any involvement in the actual act.
Further investigation led detectives to recover a firearm at Scatliffe-Kalunda’s apartment on the 9000 block of Tranquility Lake Circle. Authorities believe this weapon was used in the shooting. The case also highlights a history of conflict between Scatliffe-Kalunda and Williams, as they had been arguing throughout the week leading up to the incident.
Community leaders, including Freddy Barton, executive director of Safe & Sound Hillsborough, have expressed concern over the dangers posed by firearms. Barton emphasized that such incidents often result in unintended victims, not just those directly targeted.
“When we see these instances happen, the people that they’re shooting at aren’t necessarily the victims,” Barton said. “We see unintended victims all the time because people just don’t understand what happens when you fire that firearm.”
Safe & Sound Hillsborough, a violence prevention collaborative in the county, takes a public health approach to reducing and preventing violence. The organization works with local agencies, court systems, and school districts to find solutions to gun violence while promoting youth development and neighborhood collaboration.
Barton pointed out that both the Riverview shooting and another recent incident in Gibsonton, where surveillance video captured multiple shots fired outside a home, highlight a common issue: the lack of coping and anger management skills.
“If you don’t have the coping skills, the anger management skills, don’t pick that thing up in response to something that really won’t even matter a year from now,” Barton explained. “Life is not a video game, you don’t respond if you lose your life, and you don’t come back. You don’t get extra lives. You only have one life to live so protect your life as well as protecting others.”
Scatliffe-Kalunda is currently held at the Falkenburg Road Jail without bond. He faces several serious charges, including aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, discharging a firearm in public or on residential property, shooting at a vehicle, and attempted murder in the first-degree, premeditated firearm discharge.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of violent actions and the importance of addressing underlying issues that lead to such incidents. As the community grapples with the aftermath, discussions around gun control, conflict resolution, and public safety continue to take center stage.
