New Michigan Veteran Homes D.J. Jacobetti Will Not Displace Current Residents

Veterans currently residing at the Michigan Veteran Homes D.J. Jacobetti in Marquette will not be displaced when the new facility opens in 2027. This assurance comes from Ryan Engle, Director of Development and Strategic Engagement for Michigan Veteran Homes, who confirmed that the new home will have capacity for 108 residents. The current facility has a census just below that number, with some admissions still underway. No existing residents will be moved elsewhere during the transition.

Engle explained that while there may be some discharges or passing of residents during the construction period, this is a natural part of the skilled nursing care process. He emphasized that the occupancy levels of the current home are similar to what the new facility will accommodate, ensuring that no one is displaced.

Groundbreaking Ceremony Marks Significant Milestone

The groundbreaking ceremony for the new facility took place on Friday morning, with Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D) and U.S. Representative Jack Bergman (R) among those in attendance. Whitmer highlighted the state’s commitment to honoring veterans by providing them with the care and respect they deserve.

The new home will be located on the south side of Marquette Cinemas on Venture Drive. It will offer more than 100 veterans private spaces within a larger community setting. Residents will enjoy amenities such as coffee stations, fireplaces, and on-site haircuts, promoting a sense of comfort and dignity.

The project is being funded through a combination of federal resources, including $34 million and $64 million in funding. This investment underscores the importance of modernizing veteran care facilities across the state.

A New Era for Veteran Care

The current Michigan Veteran Homes D.J. Jacobetti, located on Fisher Street in Marquette since 1981, has served its purpose well. Bergman noted that the original facility was a vital resource at the time it was built. Now, he sees the new home as a culmination of years of effort and a celebration of collaboration.

While the groundbreaking marked an important step forward, Executive Director Anne Zerbe pointed out that much work remains before actual construction begins. Throughout the summer, efforts will focus on site preparation, including relocating a road to a different location. These steps are essential to ensure the new facility meets all necessary standards.

Marquette Charter Township Supervisor Lyn Durant expressed her enthusiasm for the project, calling it an upgrade in how the community supports those who have served. “This site was chosen and we couldn’t be happier,” she said. “Knowing our lifelong protectors will not only have an army of folks to protect them, but we’ve got your six. Oorah!”

Future Plans and Timeline

Construction is expected to be completed by the summer of 2027, with the goal of moving veterans into the new facility later that year. However, details about the future of the current home remain uncertain. As of now, no finalized plans have been made regarding its use once the new facility is operational.

The opening of the new Michigan Veteran Homes D.J. Jacobetti represents a significant step forward in providing modern, dignified care for veterans. With a focus on privacy, community, and accessibility, the project aims to set a new standard for veteran housing in the region.
