Two Killed in West Melbourne; Texas Man Charged with Murder

A Tragic Incident in West Melbourne
Brevard homicide agents are working to uncover the motives behind a tragic shooting that occurred on July 23, where a 22-year-old man from Texas allegedly shot his grandparents to death. This incident has been described by Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey as an "isolated domestic incident." The victim was identified as George and Mary White, and the suspect, Jeremyah Campbell, has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder. Additionally, he faces one count of attempted murder after firing at a neighbor following the shooting.
Campbell was located by sheriff's agents after an extensive search in and around the heavily wooded area near the couple's home. He remains in the Brevard County Jail without bond, and his initial court appearance was scheduled for July 24.
The Scene of the Shooting
The incident took place in the 2500 block of Washington Street in West Melbourne, south of U.S. 192 in unincorporated areas. The event was reported to police when gunfire erupted in the early evening on July 23. Both the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office and the West Melbourne Police Department responded around 8:50 p.m.
George White approached a neighbor to inform her that something had happened to his wife at their home. During this time, several rounds were fired at White and his 25-year-old neighbor. White was struck in the chest and rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The neighbor sustained a gunshot wound to her leg and is expected to make a full recovery.
The Aftermath and Investigation
Deputies arrived shortly after and began searching the area around the home for both the shooter and other possible victims. The body of Mary White was found inside the couple's home, according to the sheriff's office. Later, deputies used police dogs to track possible scents along the darkened stretch of Milwaukee Avenue and other nearby canal-lined roads.
Crime scene tape was used to rope off the home, which sits on nearly two acres of land. Neighbors stood outside and watched as detectives walked back and forth through the crime scene just after the shootings.
Community Reaction
Neighbors expressed their shock and sadness over the incident. Cynthia Dale, a neighbor, shared her feelings about the Whites. “They were a beautiful, friendly couple; they were like family to me,” she said. Dale spoke with emotion as she waited on the corner across from the crime scene for any word on the Whites as investigators searched for the suspect.
Dale also shared how she often interacted with the couple. “I would give her a big hug and take them some of our vegetables, big old bunches of collard greens,” she said.
Impact on the Community
This tragic event marks the 11th and 12th reported homicides in Brevard County this year. The community is coming together to support one another during this difficult time. Local authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, aiming to provide clarity and justice for the victims and their families.
Ongoing Legal Proceedings
Campbell remains in custody, and the legal process will continue as the case moves forward. The community awaits updates on the investigation and the potential charges against the suspect. As the story unfolds, the focus remains on supporting the victims' families and ensuring that justice is served.
