Two Killed in Apartment Explosion Near Country Club and Benson Highway

Tragedy Strikes Tucson: Explosion and Fire Claim Lives, Displace Residents
TUCSON, Ariz. – A devastating explosion and subsequent fire near Country Club and East Benson Highway in Pima County on Monday, July 28, have left two people dead and one critically injured. The incident occurred around 3:45 p.m. at Howdy Manor Apartments, located at 3210 East Benson Highway.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department confirmed the deaths of 58-year-old William Breyer and 55-year-old Lawrence Lee Stratch Jr. One of the victims remains in critical condition at a local hospital. Rural Metro Fire also reported that the explosion was caused by natural gas, though the exact cause is still under investigation.
Residents living near the scene described hearing the explosion and feeling their homes shake. When 13 News arrived on the scene, they witnessed the rescue of a dog from the rubble. First responders were unsure who the animal belonged to, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the event.
The property owners informed 13 News that power and gas had been shut off for the entire complex. One resident, Jesse Jameson, shared his distress with the outlet, stating he has nothing left but what he is wearing. He said, “I’ve got no food, nothing.”
Support for Displaced Residents
Tucson Property Executives (TPE), which manages the apartment complex, is working to assist displaced residents with essential needs such as clothing, food, money, housing, and transportation. The company has launched a GoFundMe campaign to support those affected, allowing donors to contribute through their website or a button provided.
In addition, TPE is collecting donations like bedding and clothing at its office located at 180 West Magee Road, Suite 110. The Red Cross is also providing temporary housing for affected residents while investigations continue.
A case worker will reach out to displaced neighbors for further assistance. Southwest Gas, the utility provider, emphasized the importance of proper maintenance for gas lines. The company stated, “The natural gas piping and facilities leading up to and including your meter are owned and rigorously maintained by Southwest Gas.” However, it clarified that all gas piping between the meter and the structure is the responsibility of the homeowner.
Southwest Gas urged residents to monitor and maintain their own gas lines, inspect them regularly for leaks or corrosion, and repair any issues immediately. They also advised homeowners to hand dig when excavating near buried gas piping.
Recent Incidents Highlight Ongoing Concerns
This tragedy marks at least the second major house explosion in Tucson within a month. On July 15, a home near Rita and Houghton exploded, destroying at least one residence and damaging others. No injuries were reported in that incident, but a family's cat, Misty, went missing before being found safe the next day. The cause of that explosion is still under investigation.
These events have raised concerns about safety and the need for vigilance among residents. As investigations continue, the community is coming together to support those affected and prevent future incidents.
