Trump's Take on New Tariff and Its Impact on US-Russia Ukraine Talks

Trump's Diplomatic Efforts and Tariff Tactics

US President Donald Trump has been actively working to broker peace between Ukraine and Russia, claiming significant progress in his efforts to end the ongoing conflict. During a recent social media post, he mentioned that Washington and Moscow have made "a lot of progress" toward this goal. Trump also hinted that America's hefty tariffs on India over its purchase of Russian oil might be related to this development. His statements come as he prepares to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as early as next week.

The push for a high-level meeting between the three leaders follows a series of diplomatic actions by Trump. He recently doubled tariffs on Indian goods to 50 percent as a response to India’s purchases of Russian energy. This move was announced shortly after a lengthy meeting between Putin and US special envoy Steve in Moscow.

Tariffs and Their Implications

Trump expressed uncertainty about whether the tariffs on India had any direct connection to the positive developments with Russia. However, he emphasized that the talks with Moscow had been "very productive." At the same time, he left open the possibility of further penalties on Russia's oil revenues.

He accused India of profiting from Russian oil by selling products made from it at a high profit. "India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian Oil, they are then, for much of the Oil purchased, selling it on the Open Market for big profits," he stated on Truth Social. Trump criticized India for not showing concern for the casualties caused by the Russian war machine.

When asked if the punitive tariff on India would be lifted if an agreement with Moscow was reached, Trump indicated it could happen. "We'll determine that later, but right now, they're paying a 50 per cent tariff."

Targeting Energy Sources

The tariffs were described as secondary measures aimed at cutting off Moscow's cash flow. Trump claimed they applied to all purchasers of Russian oil, but he specifically targeted India. He noted that India is the second-largest buyer of Russian oil, closely following China, which is a major market.

Despite this, Trump suggested that other countries, including China, could also be targeted. "It may happen. I mean, I don't know. I can't tell you yet, but I can (impose a punitive tariff). We did it with India. We're doing it probably with a couple of others. One of them could be China," he said.

Potential for Additional Measures

According to a report by Bloomberg, US officials are considering additional actions to restrict energy sales that fund Russia's war effort in Ukraine. One possible measure is new sanctions on Moscow's covert fleet of oil tankers and entities involved in their operations.

Trump previously announced a 25 percent tariff on India in his general tariff war last week. On Wednesday, he added an extra 25 percent tariff for buying Russian oil. The new oil tariff will take effect in 21 days.

India's Response

India has criticized the new tariffs, calling them "unfortunate" and stating that it will take all necessary actions to protect its national interests. New Delhi expressed disappointment that the US is imposing additional tariffs on India for actions that other countries are also taking in their own national interest.

India has made it clear that its imports are based on market factors and are aimed at ensuring the energy security of its 1.4 billion people. The country remains committed to its energy strategy despite the pressure from the US.
