Trump’s Approval Rating Hits New Low in Second Term
President Donald Trump’s approval rating has seen a decline, dropping to 40 percent, marking the lowest point of his second term according to a recent poll. The latest Reuters/Ipsos survey, conducted on Monday and involving 1,023 American adults, highlights the ongoing division among the public regarding Trump's leadership since he took office.
The poll reveals that approximately 83 percent of Republicans approve of Trump's performance, while only three percent of Democrats do. A third of independent voters also support his actions. Despite these numbers, there are some areas where Trump is receiving positive feedback. For instance, 38 percent of respondents approved of his handling of the economy, an increase from 35 percent in mid-July. Additionally, 43 percent of those surveyed supported his immigration policies, up slightly from 41 percent a few weeks earlier.
However, Trump faces challenges, particularly within one of his core voter groups: men. A recent CBS/YouGov poll indicates that his approval rating among men is declining during his second term. The poll found that 47 percent of men approve of Trump's job performance, while 53 percent do not. This marks a significant drop from October, just before Trump's re-election, when a similar poll showed 54 percent of men supporting him and 64 percent believing he would be a strong leader.
The overall decline in approval reflects broader dissatisfaction with Trump's second term. According to DecisionDeskHQ's polling averages, his overall approval rating has dropped by about 12 points since January, falling from 56 percent to 44 percent this week. Another key concern among men is Trump's focus on deportations. The CBS/YouGov poll found that 47 percent of men believe he is focusing "too much" on this issue, while 33 percent think he is on the right track. Furthermore, 65 percent of men feel Trump has not done enough to lower prices, with only 29 percent believing he has made a significant effort.
A separate Gallup poll last week placed Trump's approval rating at 37 percent, the lowest recorded for that specific poll. The three main issues contributing to the decline in approval are those that initially attracted many men to support Trump. This could pose a challenge for the Republican Party during the upcoming midterm elections if they do not adjust their messaging and focus.
Trump's declining approval ratings come at a critical time for the Republican Party, as some long-time supporters within his base and party are beginning to question his leadership. This skepticism is partly due to his handling of the so-called “Epstein files.” Trump had promised transparency regarding what the government knew about Jeffrey Epstein, a disgraced New York financier and sex offender who had a well-documented history of friendship with Trump.
After U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi announced she had the so-called Epstein “client list,” the administration backtracked and denied the existence of such a file. They also confirmed previous rulings that Epstein died by suicide in his New York jail cell while awaiting trial for child sex trafficking.
