Trump throws tantrum over Putin summit failure, calls it a 'major defeat' on social media

President Trump Expresses Frustration Over Summit with Putin
President Donald Trump recently shared his dissatisfaction on social media regarding his recent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, just a day before his planned encounter with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House. The discussion in Anchorage, Alaska, was described by Trump as "productive," focusing on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. However, no agreement was reached on a ceasefire.
After the summit, Trump told reporters, "There's no deal until there's a deal." Meanwhile, Putin referred to their conversation as merely a "reference point" for ending the conflict and a foundation for future diplomatic and economic relations between the U.S. and Russia.
Analysts have suggested that the summit was more of a win for Putin, which led Trump to express his frustration through several posts on Truth Social. In one post, he wrote, "The Fake News has been saying for 3 days that I suffered a 'major defeat' by allowing President Vladimir Putin of Russia to have a major Summit in the United States." He claimed that Putin would have preferred the meeting to take place elsewhere, adding, "If we had hosted the Summit elsewhere, the Democrat-run and controlled media would have criticized THAT as a terrible move."
In another post, Trump targeted Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy, who stated that Putin "got everything that he wanted" from the three-hour meeting. Trump dismissed Murphy as a "lightweight" and argued that it was actually difficult for Putin to meet in the U.S. He also criticized individuals like John Bolton for making it harder to end the war.
Former National Security Advisor John Bolton noted on CNN that Trump appeared "very tired" after the summit. Trump placed the responsibility on Zelensky, stating that Putin had proposed freezing the battle lines if Kyiv surrendered all of Donetsk, an industrial area that is a key Russian objective. Zelensky rejected the offer.
On Truth Social, Trump wrote, "President Zelensky of Ukraine can end the war with Russia almost immediately, if he wants to, or he can continue to fight." Zelensky will join leaders from Britain, France, Germany, Italy, and Finland for a meeting with Trump at the White House on Monday. This will be the first meeting between the Ukrainian and U.S. leaders since February.
Trump expressed excitement about the event, tweeting, "Big day at the White House tomorrow. Never had so many European Leaders at one time. My great honor to host them!!!" However, he quickly turned his attention to criticizing the media, claiming that coverage portrayed the gathering as a "big loss." He countered, "Actually, it is a great honor for America!!!"
Zelensky's supporters have welcomed Trump's efforts to mediate between Putin and Ukraine, while also pledging to support Ukraine and strengthen sanctions against Russia. Zelensky has maintained that he cannot surrender territory without constitutional changes and has demanded security guarantees to prevent future Russian attacks.
Following the summit, Trump told Putin, "We'll speak to you very soon and probably see you again very soon." Putin responded in English, "Next time in Moscow."
