Trump Struggles to Clarify Contradictory Epstein Statements

President Trump's Conflicting Statements on Epstein
During a press briefing aboard Air Force One, President Donald Trump faced questions about his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender. The president struggled to reconcile the differing accounts of their falling out and instead focused on criticizing the media for raising the issue.
The conversation began when a reporter highlighted that Trump had previously stated his split with Epstein was due to the financier taking workers from his business. The White House had earlier described Epstein as being expelled because he was a "creep." In response, Trump attempted to blend these explanations, suggesting they were essentially the same thing.
"Maybe they're the same thing. You know, a little bit of the same thing," Trump said. However, he quickly clarified that the real reason was that Epstein had taken people who worked for him. "I told him, don’t do it anymore, and he did it. I said 'stay the hell out of here,'" he added, repeating similar claims from the previous day.
When asked if this was what the administration meant by calling Epstein a "creep," Trump shifted the focus to the media, labeling NBC News as "one of the worst" and moving on to the next question. This tactic underscored his tendency to deflect scrutiny rather than address the inconsistencies in his statements.
Later in the session, another reporter questioned whether the individuals taken from Trump’s business were young women. Initially reluctant to answer, Trump eventually confirmed that some of the workers were indeed young women who worked in the spa at Mar-a-Lago.
"I have a great spa, one of the best spas in the world at Mar-a-Lago, and people were taken out of the spa," Trump said. He explained that Epstein had hired people from the spa, leading to complaints from others. "In other words, gone."
Trump and Epstein had a long-standing friendship during the 1990s and early 2000s. Epstein even attended Trump’s wedding to Marla Maples before their relationship soured. On Monday, Trump reiterated that the split was over Epstein hiring workers from his business, stating, "For years, I wouldn’t talk to Jeffrey Epstein. I wouldn’t talk because he did something that was inappropriate: He hired help."
He claimed that he had told Epstein not to do it again and that he had ultimately expelled him, saying, "I’m glad I did, if you know the truth."
However, these recent statements contradict a previous White House statement following a report by the Wall Street Journal that revealed Trump had been informed of his mention in the Epstein files. At that time, White House communications director Steven Cheung had stated, "The fact is that The President kicked him out of his club for being a creep."
Jeffrey Epstein, who pleaded guilty to soliciting prostitution from an underage girl in 2008 and served 18 months in jail, was later arrested again in July 2019 on federal sex-trafficking charges. He died in prison just over a month later before he could face trial.
