President Trump Criticizes Media and Democrats Over Summit with Putin
President Donald Trump took to Truth Social on Sunday evening to express his frustration with the media and prominent Democrats over their reactions to his recent summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The meeting, held in Alaska, was part of an effort to find a resolution to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which has lasted more than three years.
Trump is set to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday, aiming to explore ways to end the war. However, the media's response to the Alaska summit has been largely negative, focusing on the lack of clear outcomes from the meeting and Trump’s decision to welcome Putin with a red carpet.
In one of his posts, Trump accused the media of spreading false narratives. “The Fake News has been saying for 3 days that I suffered a ‘major defeat’ by allowing President Vladimir Putin of Russia to have a major Summit in the United States,” he wrote. He claimed that Putin would have preferred holding the meeting elsewhere, suggesting that the media would have criticized that choice as well. “If we had the Summit elsewhere, the Democrat run and controlled media would have said what a terrible thing THAT was. These people are sick!”
Trump also criticized Democrats and the media for allegedly wanting crime in Washington, D.C. This appears to be a reference to his decision to federalize the local police force and deploy the National Guard to the capital. He argued that the move was necessary to maintain order and security.
Disputes with Senator Chris Murphy
In another post, Trump turned his attention to Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), who had previously called Trump’s decision to federalize D.C. police a “stunt.” Trump responded by calling Murphy “very unattractive (both inside and out!)” and accused him of thinking that Putin looked good by coming to America. “Actually, it was very hard for President Putin to do so,” Trump claimed. He also suggested that the war could be ended immediately but that individuals like Murphy and former national security adviser John Bolton were making progress harder.
Murphy, in an interview with NBC News’s Kristen Welker on “Meet the Press,” claimed that Trump’s actions in Washington, D.C., were motivated by a desire to avoid scrutiny. He stated that Trump called in the National Guard because he “didn’t like the fact that the walls were closing in on him, that his own base was questioning why he wouldn’t release the Epstein files, why he was protecting very powerful people.”
Murphy also criticized the summit, arguing that Trump was effectively elevating Putin on the global stage. He emphasized that the meeting did not produce any tangible results.
Blaming Zelensky and Previous Administrations
In a third post, Trump again addressed Ukrainian President Zelensky, suggesting that the outcome of the war rested largely on his shoulders. “President Zelenskyy of Ukraine can end the war with Russia almost immediately, if he wants to, or he can continue to fight,” Trump wrote. He appeared to shift responsibility for the conflict onto Zelensky, implying that the Ukrainian leader had the power to negotiate peace.
Trump also blamed former President Barack Obama for Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and suggested that Ukraine’s discussions about joining NATO contributed to the 2022 invasion. He overlooked the fact that Russia unilaterally invaded Ukraine in 2022, following its earlier takeover of Crimea, which is recognized as part of Ukraine.
These statements reflect Trump’s continued efforts to frame the situation in a way that aligns with his political narrative, while dismissing criticism from both the media and opposition figures. His approach highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding U.S. foreign policy and the complex dynamics of the war in Ukraine.
