At a press conference held in Lafayette Park after the White House sessions, Zelensky indicated his willingness to meet with Putin. However, he emphasized that whether Trump would join them in subsequent discussions would depend on the outcome of the initial meeting. No specific date or location for these meetings has been announced yet. Meanwhile, Putin’s foreign policy aide stated that the Russian president and Trump had agreed only to have senior officials engage in direct talks between Russia and Ukraine.

European Leaders' Involvement

French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and other European leaders attempted to align their goals with those of Trump during the discussions. They suggested that a ceasefire and U.S. security guarantees for Ukraine were supported by Trump. However, Trump appeared to take a different stance, indicating that the war could end without a ceasefire. He also remained vague about what actions he might take to support Ukraine's defense in any peace deal. Trump reiterated his view that Putin is eager to end the fighting, despite the latter's rejection of a ceasefire at the Alaska summit. When asked about a ceasefire, Trump told the Europeans, "As of this moment, it's not happening."

European leaders emphasized the importance of providing security guarantees for Ukraine to protect it from future aggression. They viewed this as crucial not only for Ukraine but also for the security of the entire European continent. French President Macron highlighted this point, stating, "When we speak about security guarantees, we speak about the whole security of the European continent," according to the Associated Press.

After the meeting, Trump shared his thoughts on Truth Social, stating, "During the meeting we discussed Security Guarantees for Ukraine, which Guarantees would be provided by the various European Countries, with a coordination with the United States of America." He also described the day's talks as productive.

During the meeting, Trump had a map of Ukraine displayed on an easel, showing the front lines and combat areas. Later, Zelensky told reporters that he had a long conversation with Trump in which he expressed disagreement with the percentage of Ukrainian territory depicted on the map as under Russian control.

Concerns from European Leaders

Despite the diplomatic efforts, some European leaders voiced skepticism about the potential for peace. French President Macron stated, "I am not convinced that President Putin also wants peace," adding that Putin's ultimate goal is to gain as much territory as possible and weaken Ukraine.
