A New Alliance: Thomas Massie and the Fight for Epstein Files

In a surprising turn of events, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie has found a new cause that is uniting him with a growing number of GOP allies. This cause is his push to release the remaining documents related to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender. Once seen as an isolated voice in opposition to President Donald Trump, Massie has now become a central figure in a movement that is gaining traction among both Republicans and Democrats.

Growing Support for Transparency

Many of Trump’s supporters on Capitol Hill are frustrated with the administration for not releasing the government's remaining records about Epstein. However, they are now backing Massie, who has made this issue his primary focus. This shift is notable because it places Massie closer to the views of many Trump supporters than to those of the president himself.

A dozen House conservatives have joined Massie's resolution, which aims to force the release of all unclassified records, documents, communications, and investigative materials related to Epstein. Thirteen Democrats, including prominent figures like Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, have also lent their support.

Massie claims he has public support, citing a CBS News/YouGov poll showing that 89% of Americans want all of the Epstein files released. The poll also revealed that Republicans are evenly split on whether they are satisfied or dissatisfied with Trump’s handling of the Epstein case, which is unusual given Trump’s usual high approval ratings among his base.

Confronting the President

Massie is not afraid to challenge Trump directly. He is running for re-election while openly opposing the president, who has threatened to support a primary challenger to oust him. Massie has dismissed these threats, stating that efforts to unseat him will not only fail but could backfire.

“I think it’s gonna backfire tremendously,” Massie said. “They’re wasting millions of dollars against me, and they’re gonna lose the majority because of that.”

However, not everyone shares Massie’s confidence. Calvin Moore, a former House GOP campaign operative, pointed to the example of Bob Good, a former Virginia congressman who lost his 2024 primary to a Trump-backed challenger.

Tensions with Speaker Johnson

The conflict has extended to the top of the Republican Party. Speaker Mike Johnson, a Trump loyalist, has criticized Massie for introducing the Epstein resolution, arguing that it does not provide enough protection for victims’ identities. Johnson emphasized the need to protect victims of sex crimes, saying, “We have a moral obligation to protect people who have been the victims of these unspeakable crimes.”

Massie, however, remains undeterred. He plans to gain momentum during the House’s summer recess and intends to file a discharge petition to force a vote on the resolution if he can secure support from 218 members. In a midnight post on X, Massie challenged Johnson directly, accusing him of protecting an underage sex trafficking ring.

Broad Support from Diverse Allies

Massie’s efforts have also gained attention from influential podcasters who helped boost Trump in the 2024 election. Theo Von, for instance, has publicly questioned why some Republicans, like JD Vance, are not supporting the resolution.

Several Republicans, including Marjorie Taylor Greene, Lauren Boebert, Cory Mills, and Nancy Mace, have signed onto the Massie-Khanna resolution. Additionally, Senator Rand Paul, a fellow libertarian, has expressed strong support for Massie.

Paul praised Massie’s fiscal conservatism, pro-gun stance, and commitment to the Bill of Rights. He is planning a 10-city tour with Massie to support him and ensure that no one attempts to defeat him.

Despite the challenges, Massie continues to push forward, confident that his efforts will resonate with both his constituents and the broader public. His fight for transparency has become a significant part of the political landscape, highlighting the complex dynamics within the Republican Party.
