Trump Jokes About 2028 War and No More Elections, Gets Laugh from Zelenskyy

Trump's Remarks on Extended Presidency Highlight Longstanding Ambitions
President Donald Trump recently met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House, marking a more cordial interaction compared to their previous encounter in February. During this meeting, Trump appeared to take note of Zelenskyy’s comments about pausing elections during wartime, which he humorously suggested could apply to the U.S. in "three and a half years." This remark has drawn attention as it aligns with Trump's long-standing interest in extending his time in office beyond the two-term limit.
This is not the first time Trump has hinted at remaining in power past his constitutional limits. He has previously sold "Trump 2028" merchandise on his website and made statements suggesting there are potential loopholes for serving a third term. In a March interview with NBC News, Trump did not elaborate on these methods but emphasized that he was not joking about the possibility.
Several potential strategies have been discussed by supporters and analysts. One option involves amending the Constitution through either a two-thirds vote in Congress or a constitutional convention, though both are considered highly improbable. Another idea is for Vice President JD Vance to win the 2028 election on a Trump-Vance ticket and then resign. Steve Bannon, Trump’s former chief strategist, has expressed confidence that Trump will run again in 2028, suggesting there are alternative ways to interpret term limits.
In addition to Zelenskyy, Trump hosted a number of European leaders, including NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and several other heads of state. This multi-lateral meeting occurred just days after Trump’s summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, where they discussed potential progress on Ukraine but did not reach a ceasefire agreement.
During the Putin meeting, Trump also mentioned discussing mail-in voting, leading to a social media rant on Truth Social. He criticized the use of mail-in ballots and voting machines, claiming they are inaccurate and expensive. Trump falsely stated that no other country uses mail-in voting, suggesting it leads to widespread voter fraud. He announced plans to initiate an executive order to address what he calls dishonesty in the 2026 midterm elections.
Trump also claimed that Putin agreed with his assertion that the 2020 election was rigged due to mail-in voting. He cited Putin’s comments, although the accuracy of these claims remains questionable. Despite criticism of his foreign policy approach, Trump expressed confidence in his ability to negotiate a peace deal, dismissing critics who have worked on conflicts for years without success.
The president's continued focus on re-election possibilities and his interactions with global leaders highlight ongoing discussions about his future in politics. Whether these ambitions will materialize remains uncertain, but Trump's statements continue to generate significant attention and debate.
