During an AI Summit in Washington, D.C., former President Donald Trump made headlines by declaring, “It’s so uncool to be woke.” This statement came as part of his broader campaign against what he calls “poisonous Marxism” in technology. Trump signed an executive order titled “Preventing Woke AI in the Federal Government,” which aims to restrict the influence of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) principles within federal AI systems.

The executive order mandates that all federal agencies ensure “ideological neutrality” in AI tools used or promoted by the government. It explicitly prohibits the use of concepts such as critical race theory, transgenderism, intersectionality, systemic racism, and even discrimination itself. According to the order, DEI initiatives are seen as a threat to the accuracy and reliability of AI systems, as they allegedly prioritize “preferred outcomes” over factual truth.

Trump criticized previous administrations for allowing these ideologies to infiltrate AI development. He specifically targeted the policies of former President Joe Biden, whose executive order focused on racial equity in AI industries. She highlighted areas where AI could make a difference, such as lower energy bills, improved healthcare, faster disaster response, and more efficient public services.

Omaar noted that the success of the plan would depend on whether it delivers real results. “Whether these efforts scale and deliver results will determine whether the plan fulfills its dual promise: AI for the American people—and American AI for global leadership,” she said.

Criticism from Advocacy Groups

Despite the administration’s focus on AI leadership, several advocacy groups have raised concerns about the potential impact of the new policies. A coalition calling for a “People’s AI Action Plan” criticized the Trump administration’s approach, arguing that it prioritizes big tech and corporate interests over the needs of everyday citizens.

In a statement, the coalition warned against allowing large corporations and lobbyists to shape AI regulations. They emphasized that the unchecked expansion of AI could negatively affect freedom, equality, and the well-being of workers and families. The groups urged for a fairer economy, stronger innovation, and relief from tech monopolies that often put profits ahead of public interest.
