Trump Imposes Major Tariffs on Brazil Amid Bolsonaro's Alleged Witch Hunt

Tensions Escalate Between the US and Brazil Over Legal Proceedings
Donald Trump has made it clear that he is prepared to take strong action against Brazil if the country continues to pursue legal proceedings against former President Jair Bolsonaro. The US president has announced plans to impose a 50% tariff on Brazilian goods starting from Friday, unless Brazil halts what he describes as a "witch hunt" against Bolsonaro.
This move comes after the United States imposed financial sanctions on Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes under the Magnitsky Act. This legislation is typically reserved for individuals accused of serious human rights violations. As a result, any assets that De Moraes holds in the United States will be frozen, and U.S. institutions and citizens will be prohibited from engaging in business with him.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating that the sanctions were a response to "serious human rights abuses," including "arbitrary detention involving flagrant denials of fair trial guarantees and infringing on the freedom of expression."
Bolsonaro, who served as Brazil's president from 2019 to 2023, faces the possibility of decades in prison if found guilty of plotting a coup following his defeat in the 2022 election to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Lula, leader of Brazil’s far-left Workers’ Party, has strongly criticized Trump’s actions, calling them "unacceptable blackmail" and accusing the U.S. of interfering in Brazilian justice.
Lula described the situation as a "grave attack on national sovereignty." Similarly, Brazil’s Minister of Institutional Relations, Gleisi Hoffmann, took to social media to condemn the sanctions against De Moraes, labeling the decision as "a violent and arrogant act" and accusing the U.S. of meddling in Brazil’s judicial system.
A History of Conflict Between the U.S. and Brazilian Courts
This is not the first time that the Trump administration has clashed with Brazilian courts. Earlier this year, Marco Rubio imposed visa bans on eight judges from Brazil’s Supreme Court for their role in Bolsonaro’s trial and for actions taken against U.S. social media companies.
Brazil has been pushing tech firms to remove content deemed anti-democratic or "hate speech." In 2024, Justice De Moraes blocked access to Elon Musk’s X platform after it refused to ban accounts that the court considered to be spreading "misinformation" during Brazil’s 2022 presidential election. The ban was lifted after X paid $5.1 million in fines and agreed to appoint a local representative for the social media site.
Trump has also accused the Brazilian Supreme Court of issuing "secret and unlawful censorship orders" to U.S. social media platforms. Meanwhile, Bolsonaro’s son, Eduardo, moved to the U.S. earlier this year to pressure the Trump administration into imposing sanctions on Brazil in response to his father’s treatment.
Bolsonaro has expressed a desire to travel to the U.S. to help his son lobby for sanctions, should he regain his passport. His passport was taken when he was deemed a flight risk.
Legal Restrictions on Bolsonaro
In recent weeks, Justice De Moraes has imposed several restrictions on Bolsonaro, including a ban on giving interviews and requiring him to wear an ankle monitor. These measures have further fueled tensions between Brazil and the U.S.
Lula, who recently referred to Trump as an "emperor," warned that the high tariffs could lead to a "lose-lose" situation for both countries. On Monday, Trump took to Truth Social to express his frustration with Brazil’s treatment of Bolsonaro, writing: "Brazil is doing a terrible thing on their treatment of former President Jair Bolsonaro. He is not guilty of anything, except having fought for THE PEOPLE."
Bolsonaro is expected to hear his verdict from the Supreme Court in August or September. The outcome of this case could have significant implications for the political landscape in Brazil and its relationship with the United States.
