Trump Claims Epstein Recruited Sex-Trafficking Victim from Mar-a-Lago

The Unraveling of a Friendship

President Donald Trump recently shared an extensive account of how and why his long-standing relationship with Jeffrey Epstein ended. According to Trump, the friendship came to an end because Epstein had taken young female spa workers from Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s prestigious club in Palm Beach, Florida.

Trump confirmed that one of the women who left Mar-a-Lago under Epstein's influence was Virginia Giuffre, a prominent victim of Epstein’s sex-trafficking ring. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump provided the most detailed explanation yet about the breakdown of their relationship. Epstein, who pleaded guilty to sex offenses and died in custody in 2019, was ruled to have committed suicide.

The comments were made as the White House continued efforts to manage a growing political backlash over the handling of documents related to Epstein's case. This controversy began when the Justice Department announced it would not release certain files that many of Trump’s supporters had demanded to see.

Despite Trump’s explanation, several questions remain unanswered regarding the reasons for the rift between him and Epstein. Additionally, the timeline of their relationship does not fully align with the details provided.

A History of Tensions

White House officials previously stated that Trump had expelled Epstein from Mar-a-Lago two decades ago for being “a creep.” Trump elaborated on this, telling reporters that Epstein had taken people from the club, which led to a confrontation.

“I didn’t like it when he took people,” Trump said. “When they steal people, I don’t like it.” He claimed that Epstein had taken spa workers, leading to complaints from others. Once Trump learned about this, he told Epstein to stop, and when it happened again, he sent him away.

Mar-a-Lago has always been more than just a residence for Trump. It serves as a key location for his political operations, a venue for high-profile events, and a symbol of the MAGA movement. The estate is also a place where Trump entertains guests and hosts international leaders.

Virginia Giuffre and the Role of Ghislaine Maxwell

When asked if one of the spa workers was Giuffre, who died by suicide this year, Trump initially said he didn’t know. However, he later appeared to confirm that she was one of the individuals Epstein had taken.

“She worked at the spa. I think that was one of the people. Yeah, he stole her,” Trump said. He added that Giuffre had no complaints about the club, stating, “She had no complaints about us, as you know, none whatsoever.”

Giuffre’s testimony in a 2016 deposition revealed that she had started working at Mar-a-Lago in 2000 as a locker room attendant. She was approached by Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s partner, who offered her a position as a traveling masseuse. Maxwell is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence for her role in Epstein’s sex-trafficking operation.

A Relationship That Wasn’t Always Adversarial

Despite the eventual fallout, Trump did not immediately show any signs of anger toward Epstein over the loss of Giuffre. In 2002, during a New York magazine profile of Epstein, Trump described him as a “terrific guy” and even noted that Epstein shared his interest in beautiful women.

In 2019, when Epstein was indicted on federal sex-trafficking charges, Trump claimed that the two had a falling out 15 years earlier. “The reason doesn’t make any difference, frankly,” he said at the time. This would place the end of their relationship around 2004, when both men competed to purchase a Palm Beach mansion.

Managing the Fallout

Trump and his allies have struggled to contain the public outcry surrounding the administration’s handling of the Epstein investigation. Some of his most loyal supporters have criticized him for not releasing full details of the case, a promise he had made during his campaign.

Trump has attempted to downplay his past friendship with Epstein and has tried, with limited success, to shift focus away from the issue. On Tuesday, when a reporter asked why he had changed his story about the reasons for their falling out, Trump refused to answer. Instead, he accused the reporter of being part of “fake news” because she worked for NBC News.
