Trump Charges Obama with Treason Over 2016 Russia Probe

Trump Accuses Obama of "Treason" Over 2016 Election Claims
U.S. President Donald Trump has made a series of serious allegations against former President Barack Obama, accusing him of “treason” for allegedly orchestrating efforts to link Trump to Russia and undermine his 2016 presidential campaign. These claims, however, lack any supporting evidence and have been widely dismissed as baseless.
Trump’s accusations came after remarks from his intelligence chief, Tulsi Gabbard, who claimed that top officials from the Obama administration were involved in a “treasonous conspiracy” to sabotage Trump during the 2016 election. Gabbard declassified some documents and suggested that these actions warranted referral to the Justice Department for prosecution. She described the alleged activities as an effort to “steal the election.”
Despite these claims, Obama’s spokesperson called the allegations “ridiculous and a weak attempt at distraction.” The statement emphasized that there is no credible evidence to support the idea that the Obama administration engaged in criminal behavior related to the 2016 election.
The U.S. intelligence community released an assessment in January 2017 that concluded Russia used social media disinformation, hacking, and bot farms to influence the election. However, this report found no evidence that Moscow's actions actually changed voting outcomes. It also noted that while Russia sought to damage Hillary Clinton’s campaign and support Trump, the impact was likely limited.
A 2020 bipartisan report by the Senate intelligence committee found that Russia used various methods, including the involvement of Republican political operative Paul Manafort and the WikiLeaks website, to try to influence the 2016 election in favor of Trump. Despite this, the findings did not indicate that any votes were manipulated.
Trump Under Pressure
Trump has faced increasing pressure from his conservative base to release more information about Jeffrey Epstein, who died in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. Some conspiracy theorists have urged Trump to disclose files related to Epstein, given his past association with the financier.
In response to questions about Epstein, Trump shifted focus to attacks on Obama and Clinton, claiming that they had “caught President Obama absolutely cold.” He suggested that action would be taken against Obama and his former officials, calling the Russia investigation a “treasonous act” and accusing Obama of attempting to “lead a coup.”
Democratic Representative Jim Himes responded to Trump’s claims, stating that they were false and urging the president to consult with Marco Rubio, who led a bipartisan Senate investigation that found no evidence of politicization in the intelligence community’s actions during the 2016 election.
Attacks on Previous Leaders
Obama has long been a target of Trump’s rhetoric. In 2011, Trump accused Obama of not being born in the United States, prompting Obama to release his birth certificate. Since returning to office, Trump has continued to criticize his Democratic predecessors, making accusations without evidence against both Obama and current President Joe Biden.
Recently, Trump launched an investigation into Biden, claiming that he and his staff conspired to use an autopen to sign sensitive documents. Biden has denied these claims, calling them “false and ridiculous.”
Gabbard’s allegations that Obama conspired to subvert Trump’s 2016 election are contradicted by multiple reports, including a CIA review ordered by Director John Ratcliffe and a 2018 bipartisan Senate report. These documents show that Gabbard conflated two separate intelligence findings regarding Russia’s actions during the 2016 election.
One finding indicated that Russia was not trying to hack U.S. election infrastructure, while the second suggested that Moscow was using cyber means to influence the political environment through propaganda and data leaks. The January 2017 assessment built on the latter finding, concluding that Russian President Vladimir Putin authorized operations to sway the election in favor of Trump.
While the review ordered by Ratcliffe identified flaws in the production of the assessment, it did not dispute its conclusion and upheld the quality and credibility of the underlying CIA report.
