Trump Announces Talks Between Putin and Zelenskyy

Trump Announces Potential Meeting Between Putin and Zelenskyy to Address Ukraine Conflict
President Donald Trump has announced that he is in the process of arranging a face-to-face meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This potential meeting aims to explore a pathway toward ending Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which has been ongoing for nearly four years. The announcement came shortly after Trump held a phone call with Putin on Monday, while also hosting Zelenskyy and European leaders at the White House to discuss strategies for ending the conflict.
Trump shared the news on social media, stating that he had begun the arrangements for a meeting between the two leaders at an unspecified location. He also mentioned the possibility of a “Trilat” meeting involving himself, Putin, and Zelenskyy. “This was a very good, early step for a war that has been going on for almost four years,” Trump said.
However, it remains unclear whether Putin has fully agreed to such talks. According to reports from Russian state news agency Tass, Putin’s foreign affairs adviser, Yuri Ushakov, stated that both leaders supported continuing direct negotiations between Russian and Ukrainian delegations. Ushakov also mentioned that they discussed the idea of raising the level of these direct talks.
Zelenskyy, following the White House meeting, expressed concerns that if Russia does not demonstrate a willingness to engage in dialogue, Ukraine may request the United States to take further action. He emphasized the importance of meeting without conditions, stating that any discussion about the future of the war should be based on mutual understanding rather than pre-set demands.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who attended the White House discussions, warned that if Russia refuses to engage in direct talks with Ukraine, the United States and Europe would consider increasing tariffs and sanctions against Moscow. This reflects growing concern among European leaders about the potential for further escalation in the region.
Shift in Trump's Position on Ceasefire and Territorial Issues
During his meetings with Zelenskyy and European leaders, Trump suggested that a potential ceasefire and the resolution of territorial disputes should be addressed during a direct meeting between the two leaders. “We’re going to let the president go over and talk to the president and we’ll see how that works out,” Trump said.
This marked a shift from previous comments where Trump appeared to support Putin’s demands for concessions regarding Ukrainian territory. Currently, Russia controls roughly one-fifth of Ukraine’s land, including Crimea, which was annexed in 2014.
Zelenskyy previously indicated that a ceasefire must come before any meeting with Putin. However, he now believes that setting conditions could lead to similar demands from Russia. “That’s why I believe we must meet without any conditions,” Zelenskyy said.
U.S. and NATO Security Guarantees for Ukraine
Trump also announced his support for European security guarantees for Ukraine, as he met with Zelenskyy and the leaders of France, Britain, Germany, Italy, Finland, the European Commission, and NATO. While Trump did not commit U.S. troops to a collective effort, he suggested a “NATO-like” security presence would be established.
Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of U.S. involvement in these security guarantees, stating that a clear signal from the United States would be crucial. “It is important that the United States make a clear signal, namely that they will be among the countries that will help to coordinate and also participate in security guarantees for Ukraine,” he said.
Meanwhile, Russia’s Foreign Ministry rejected the idea of a NATO peacekeeping force in Ukraine, warning that such a move could lead to further escalation and unpredictable consequences.
A New Dynamic in U.S.-Ukrainian Relations
Trump’s recent engagement with Zelenskyy contrasted sharply with their last Oval Office meeting in February, which ended abruptly and led to a temporary pause in U.S. aid to Ukraine. During Monday’s meeting, however, Zelenskyy presented a letter from his wife, Olena Zelenska, for Melania Trump. This gesture highlighted a more diplomatic tone compared to the previous encounter.
Zelenskyy also made a conscious effort to appear more formal, wearing a dark jacket and buttoned shirt instead of his usual casual attire. He explained that his less formal style since the start of the invasion in 2022 was meant to show solidarity with Ukrainian soldiers.
European Leaders Seek Stability and Peace
European leaders arrived in Washington to address concerns about the potential for further aggression from Moscow. Ahead of the meetings, Trump suggested that Ukraine might not be able to reclaim Crimea, a statement that sparked immediate backlash from Zelenskyy. In response, Zelenskyy reiterated his commitment to a lasting peace, emphasizing that any agreement must prevent future conflicts.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz praised Trump for opening the door to peace but urged him to push for a ceasefire. “I would like to see a ceasefire from the next meeting, which should be a trilateral meeting,” Merz said.
Trump, meanwhile, remained optimistic about the possibility of a broader peace agreement. “A broader, war-ending peace agreement between the two countries is very attainable,” he said. “But all of us would obviously prefer the immediate ceasefire while we work on a lasting peace.”
