Trump Announces Putin-Zelensky Peace Summit Plan

Trump Announces Plans for Peace Summit Between Zelensky and Putin
US President Donald Trump has announced that he has begun organizing a peace summit between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin. This development came after intense discussions with Zelensky and European leaders at the White House. Trump emphasized that the talks were productive and laid the groundwork for further diplomatic efforts.
During the meeting, Trump spoke directly with Putin, who he met in Alaska just days earlier. He shared on his Truth Social platform that he had initiated arrangements for a potential meeting between the two leaders at an unspecified location. Trump also mentioned that he would be part of a three-way summit involving Zelensky, Putin, and himself.
The president expressed optimism about the possibility of achieving peace between Russia and Ukraine. “Everyone is very happy about the possibility of PEACE for Russia/Ukraine,” he wrote. According to a source familiar with the discussions, Putin indicated he was open to meeting with Zelensky.
Security Guarantees for Ukraine
Trump also discussed the topic of security guarantees for Ukraine as part of a broader peace deal with Russia. He stated that European countries would take the lead in providing these guarantees while coordinating with the United States. This comes despite Putin's previous rejection of Ukraine’s aspirations to join NATO, a long-standing goal for Kyiv.
“During the meeting we discussed Security Guarantees for Ukraine, which Guarantees would be provided by the various European Countries, with a coordination with the United States of America,” Trump explained. This suggests a shift in strategy, focusing more on regional security rather than NATO membership.
A Calmer Meeting and Improved Relations
The White House hosted an unusual gathering that included Trump, Zelensky, and leaders from Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Finland, the European Commission, and NATO. This meeting marked a significant moment, as it was the first one-on-one encounter between Trump and Zelensky since their tense exchange in February.
Zelensky described the meeting as their "best" yet. The atmosphere was notably calmer compared to the previous confrontation, where Trump and Vice President JD Vance criticized Zelensky for not showing gratitude for US support. This time, Trump even complimented Zelensky on his choice of attire, addressing concerns raised by right-wing media during a previous visit.
Optimism and Concerns About the Conflict
Trump expressed hope that the conflict could be resolved within a few weeks. “In a week or two weeks, we're going to know whether or not we're going to solve this or is this horrible fighting going to continue,” he said at the start of the meeting.
However, the presence of European leaders highlighted ongoing concerns about Trump's pressure on Kyiv to make concessions to Moscow. Some European officials have been wary of Trump's approach, particularly his push for Ukraine to give up Crimea and abandon its NATO aspirations.
Talks on Territorial Exchanges
Trump reportedly urged Ukraine to consider territorial exchanges with Russia, including the possibility of ceding parts of the Donbas region. Reports suggest that Putin is seeking to freeze the frontline in exchange for control over certain areas. However, Ukraine has firmly rejected any such moves.
Despite these challenges, European leaders praised Trump for his efforts to bring about peace. NATO chief Mark Rutte expressed excitement about the potential for progress, saying, “Let's make the best out of today.”
French President Emmanuel Macron, however, called for a separate four-way meeting involving European nations to address the ongoing conflict. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz disagreed with Trump’s emphasis on a full peace deal, advocating instead for a ceasefire before any summit.
Merz also warned against pressuring Ukraine to surrender territory to Russia, emphasizing the need for a balanced approach.
Ongoing Violence and Human Toll
Meanwhile, Russian strikes overnight killed at least seven people in Ukraine, including two children. These attacks underscore the continued human cost of the conflict, even as diplomatic efforts continue.
