"Truly Missed": Henrico Mourns Employee Killed in Crash

Tragedy Strikes Henrico County as Longtime Employee Dies in Single-Vehicle Crash
Henrico County is mourning the loss of a dedicated employee who passed away in a single-vehicle crash on Monday evening. The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. on July 28, when officers from the Henrico County Police Division were called to the intersection of Hungary Spring and Staples Mill Road after reports of a collision.
According to initial findings, 46-year-old Tony Darrell Volley of Henrico was driving north on Hungary Spring Road at the time of the accident. It is believed that he was speeding when he struck several power poles, resulting in his death at the scene. While the cause of the crash is still under investigation, authorities have not ruled out the possibility that Volley may have experienced a medical emergency prior to the incident.
Volley was a well-respected member of the community, having served as a sports facility supervisor with the county’s Division of Recreation & Parks for nearly a decade. He began his career with the department in 2016 and was promoted to his current role in 2024. His work primarily took place at Dorey and RF&P parks, where he was known for his dedication and commitment to serving both his colleagues and residents.
A Legacy of Excellence and Service
In a heartfelt statement shared with local media, Henrico County Manager John A. Vithoulkas expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Volley. He described him as a coworker and friend to many within the county, emphasizing his strong work ethic, team-first attitude, and positive demeanor.
“Tony was admired and respected by his colleagues — and by the park patrons he served — for his exemplary work ethic, his team-first mindset and his steady, positive attitude,” Vithoulkas said. “He put others first in his work and always sought to provide the best level of service both for his coworkers and for our residents. He will be truly missed by his Recreation & Parks family.”
The county manager urged the broader Henrico community to come together and support Volley’s loved ones during this difficult time. He emphasized that the loss of such a dedicated individual has left a significant void in the lives of those who knew him.
Honoring a Life of Service
As a tribute to Volley’s contributions to the county, Vithoulkas issued an order for the Henrico County flag to be flown at half-staff at all county buildings and facilities from sunrise to sunset on Friday, August 1. This gesture is meant to honor and remember the impact Volley had on the community and the people he worked alongside.
The statement also encouraged everyone to keep Volley’s family and friends in their thoughts and to reach out to colleagues in the Recreation & Parks department during this challenging period.
“We share their grief at this difficult time,” Vithoulkas said. “As a Henrico family, we are united in our sorrow and support for those who have been affected by this tragic loss.”
Ongoing Investigation and Community Response
The Henrico County Police Division continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. Authorities are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact Crash Investigator T. Holmes at 804-501-5000.
As the community comes to terms with this loss, many are reflecting on the legacy of Tony Volley. His dedication to public service, his kindness, and his unwavering commitment to his work have left a lasting impression on those who knew him.
